Here uptown on Mascher St., we present music under polite, controlled conditions. Meanwhile, downtown at 15th and Ritner, all hell breaks loose on Tuesdays at Arturo’s most-exuberant, no-holds-barred musical celebrations of Latin and “not-so-Latin” music, with teeming audiences spilling out onto the streets. This artist is the real deal.

Arturo headlined a blistering salon @exuberance back in September of 2016. He appeared again memorably with Chano Dominguez in 2017 and again that year with the phenomenal Ariacne Trujillo. A prolific composer with several terrific albums to his name as leader, Arturo has performed and recorded with a dizzying rollcall of great musicians including Dave Samuels, Paquito D’Rivera, Lionel Loueke, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding, Miguel Zenon, Jane Bunnett and David Sanchez. Originally from Santiago de Cuba, Arturo’s transit between percussionist and drummer reflects an evolving curiosity and mastery of many styles of jazz and traditional musics.

Joining Arturo for this performance of his compositions new and old:Roberta Piket began studying piano at age 7. Teachers included Walter Bishop, Jr., Fred Hersch, Stanley Cowell, Bob Moses and Richie Beirach. She has performed with Dave Liebman, Rufus Reid, Victor Jones, Lionel Hampton, Mickey Roker, Eliot Zigmund, Benny Golson, Ted Curson, Valery Ponomarev, Juini Booth, Virginia Mayhew, and the BMI/NY Jazz Orchestra. A composer and educator, Roberta leads her own trio and performs solo. She is master of both piano and the B3.Yunior Terry began his musical training at age 7 also—at the National School of Art in Havana, with a double major in violin and bass. At CalArts he studied under Charlie Haden. He has performed with Steve Coleman, Jerry Gonzales and Fort Apache, Lila Downs, Jeff Tain Watts, Eddie Palmieri, Hilton Ruiz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Steve Turre, Jane Bunnett, and his brother Yosvany Terry among many others. He leads his own band “Son de Altura” and teaches at NYU.
At this post-Labor Day salon, expect fireworks and extreme beauty with this dynamic trio.
