November 1, 2019 8:30PM PhillyBloco Halloween Bash at Ardmore Music Hall
PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.
Our music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. We want to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate every time they see us perform!

October 25, 2019 7:00-10:00PM October Twilight in the Gardens with Paulette Branson and Mixed People
For the last Twilight in the Gardens of the year we’re celebrating all things otherworldly!
Catch a lively performance by Paulette Branson & Mixed People, a funky, soul fusion band with hints of rock and world music, otherwise known as new age funk. Mixed People is a Philadelphia-based band, founded by guitarist, Paulette Branson, in August 2012. The music is progressive, and the energy and emotion behind this band will get you dancing on your feet and singing along!
This month’s Teaching Artist is Erika Guadalupe Núñez (she/her/hers/ella), a queer immigrant, artist, and cultural organizer. Erika Guadalupe’s public work centers around creating art with members of her community, in order to highlight issues of inequality as they pertain to the immigrant rights movement. You can follow Erika’s work on Instagram at @monequiltia.
For October’s activity, Erika Guadalupe will lead guests in creating papel picado designs to be formed into garlands or to be framed as single works of art. Take home your papel picado and celebrate the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos early!
As an added bonus, for an additional fee we’ll also be offering tarot card readings with Special Guest Kat Hennessy! Hennessy is a Philly-based astrologer, teacher at The Philadelphia School, artist, and positive psychology practitioner. Kat practices astrology from a deep desire to celebrate the magical and powerful essential nature of each being on this planet. You can follow her on Instagram @SpritelySage.
Twilight in the Gardens is a BYOBBS event (Bring Your Own Booze, Blanket, and Snacks), and guests are encouraged to relax and picnic in the space.

Trap Rabbbit
Philly duo Trap Rabbit could easily qualify as stretch music… though they might prefer their own category of “weirdo beat rock.” Indeed, Arjun Dube’s complex drumbeats are prominently present in the band’s work, propping up and goading on Logan Roth’s expressionistic keyboard playing. It’s rooted in freewheeling jazz improvisation, but also lively hip-hop energy; sleek and suave disco grooves, and also laid-back funk.

October 11, 2019 9:00PM SAMBADÁ + RAFAEL PONDÉ + FRIENDS at World Cafe Live PHL
SAMBADÁ
While Brazilian natives Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora bring their profound knowledge and respect for the roots of Afro-Brazilian song and dance, the entire band has developed a type of samba-reggae-funk with a universal appeal. SambaDá musically unites the Americas and Africa, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America and Senegal, and blends it with that good old funk, rock and reggae backbeat so familiar to crowds of North America.
For over 20 years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of Brazilian culture. Papiba is a master of Capoeira, an Afro Brazilian martial art form created by Brazilian slaves, which draws on music and acrobatic movements. Dandha was born into the rich Afro Brazilian traditions of Salvador, Bahia and the Carnival Group Ile Aiye, and started her dancing career at age 6. Ile Aiye has been in the forefront of Civil Rights in Brazil, promoting equality and justice, and is widely recognized as the first Afro Brazilian BLOCO or group to perform in Brazil's notorious Carnival celebrations.
The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of cultures, styles, generations and sensibilities. Minnesota native Gary Kehoe brings a depth of decades of experience with a wide range of playing styles from Caribbean to bluegrass, rock, funk and more. Hailing from Brooklyn New York, bassist and vocalist, Etienne Franc, also known as KostarOne and roKsta OrKestra has been performing locally and internationally for the past 20 years, as, bassist, guitarist, singer and Rapper. Playing saxophone, flute, clarinet, percussion, and on vocals, California girl, Anne Stafford, pursued jazz & cultural studies in college and has infused SambaDá with her soulful and expressive playing and her passion for jazz, hip-hop, R&B, gospel and Brazilian music. Percussion Ibrahima (Ibou) N’gom was born into a Griot family of traditional musicians in Senegal , West Africa. He has been carrying on his family’s musical lineage since childhood. Ibrahima toured with two prominent Senegalese dance companies, the 2nd National Ballet of Senegal and the Ballet Sinomew before coming to the United States 20 years ago.
What unites this band from such diverse backgrounds is a magic that can be felt by both the band and the audience. SambaDá brings joy to each performance, and keeps their fans asking for more!!
