January 13, 2022 7:00-11:00PM Jazz Fundraiser for The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts

All That Jazz!

Chris’ Jazz Café Teams Up with the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts for Fundraiser
to Benefit Historic Performing Arts Institution

Two Dozen Jazz Musicians to Perform from 7 to 11 p.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2022
You could call it the ultimate Philadelphia musical duet – two legendary icons in the history of the city’s jazz scene are partnering to benefit the future of young artists and to help keep this genre alive. Chris’ Jazz Café, the longest continuously operating jazz club in the city, will host an unprecedented musical fundraiser on Thursday, January 13 from 7 to 11 p.m. to benefit the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts (PCC). The fundraiser, in the form of a live and livestreamed show, will showcase alumni of the Clef Club who have become musical luminaries and internationally acclaimed artists in their field. 100% of funds raised will be donated to the Clef Club to help its mission of preserving the legacy of jazz through accessible education.

“The Clef Club is such an integral part of Philadelphia’s jazz community. They’re nurturing the young talent that keeps the music alive, plus many of their students eventually make their way to our stage. We feel that it is one of the most important ways that we can contribute to this ongoing process of keeping jazz relevant in Philadelphia,” said Mark DeNinno, Chef/Owner, Chris’ Jazz Café.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Chris’ Jazz Café on this fundraiser,” noted Lovett Hines, Artistic Director of PCC. “When I first started the educational program, I had two students. Over the past several decades, the Clef Club jazz education program has grown to serve thousands of students in the Delaware Valley who have gone on to become successful professional musicians. Funds raised will also go towards our capital campaign to renovate and upgrade our cultural facility at 736 South Broad Street on the Avenue of the Arts.”

The Clef Club, a tax-exempt, non-profit educational and cultural organization, has a rich history. It was founded in 1966 by members of Musicians' Protective Union Local #274, the American Federation of Musicians. Local #274 was chartered in 1935 as a separate Black Local because Black musicians were denied membership in the racially segregated Local #77. It was the longest surviving independent Black Musicians' Union in the United States. Membership rolls included jazz greats like John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington, Jr. and Nine Simone, to name a few. The PCC has established a world-class music education program developed by Hines. Since 1985, youth and adults participate in a broad program of private instruction, master class, ensembles, summer jazz camp and performance. Alumni have included multi-Grammy winner Christian McBride, multi-Grammy nominated Orrin Evans and Joey Defrancesco, Jaleel Shaw, Immanuel Wilkens, Joseph Block and Yessah Furaha-Ali, among others.

The lineup for the January 13th event is a Who’s Who of noteworthy performers:

Join us at the Overbrook Garage Studio for Winter classes beginning January 8! We have several exciting classes, including a new class, Improvisation por Tangos and Bulerias 1 taught by Elba Hevia y Vaca.

NEW CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Since flamenco is a conversation between the singer, dancer, guitarist, and palmeros, improvisation is very important skill to develop. We will learn the first three levels of improvisation.

First, we will learn the structure of the tangos or bulerias.

Stage One:

We will follow a choreography that we have learned por tangos or bulerias adapt it in the moment based on the cante.

Stage Two:

Create your own choreography and adapt it in the moment based on the cante.

In both levels one and two we will learn to improvise within a set piece by adapting parts of that choreography. We will do this by:

1.    adding steps

2.    subtracting steps

3.    making a step longer

4.    making a step shorter

Stage Three:

Follow a partial plan.

We will have in mind some moves (learned from others &/or created on your own) that you intend to do during certain parts of your dance, and allow for other moves to show up in the moment during the other parts.

Classes are $15 for drop in; $78 for a 6 class card. Discount available for students or dance professionals. Payment via Venmo or cash.

January 8, 2022 8:00PM Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Omar's Hat at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia

PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND

At a moment when musical streams are crossing with unprecedented frequency, it’s crucial to remember that throughout its history, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge, mingle, and resurface, transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history.

PHJB marches that tradition forward once again on So It Is, the septet’s second release featuring all-new original music. The album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport, including legends like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.

OMAR'S HAT

Omar's Hat started on the corner of 45th and Locust when a group of musicians gathered at Meskerem to spark a jam that’s never stopped since. This collective is our open act of rebellion, always expanding, never settling. This music is our love for Philadelphia, for a history of sounds that make and remake us every day. Our music is for Omar, whose dance never quit reminding us that each day is to be treasured; that you can always find magic in the everyday. This music is for you, come join in. All creative attitudes are welcomed and celebrated.

Omar's Hat is free to try on and wear out and pass off to a friend or a loved one or a sister or a stranger. We thank you for being a part of the vibe.
