 Ring in the Year of the Snake at our 44th annual Lunar New Year celebration. Bring the whole family to experience vibrant Asian traditions during a full day of festivities, including storytelling, art-making, live music and dance performances, and a traditional Lion Dance finale.

Lunar New Year is observed by various Asian communities, including those of Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tibetan descent. The festivities traditionally commence with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and conclude 15 days later on the first full moon. Originating as a time for respite from agricultural work and togetherness with loved ones, Lunar New Year incorporates customs such as feasts, gift exchanges, lantern lighting, and offerings to deities and ancestors.

January 16, 2025 6:00PM Screening of "Tracing Sacred Steps: The Cinematic Experience" at Temple University

 


In collaboration with Brownbody, we're starting 2025 with a special screening of "Tracing Sacred Steps: The Cinematic Experience" at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Stella Elkins Gallery, on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 6 pm.

Directed by Deneane Richburg and Aidan Un, the film centers on Brownbody's "Ring Shout," a performance blending dance, theater, figure skating, embodied by a professional cast of Black skating artists. Watch the film trailer here.

"Tracing Sacred Steps: The Cinematic Experience" is followed by a discussion facilitated by Sandra Richardson (Brownbody's Undoing Racism, Healing, and Organizational Consultant), with:

  • Co-Director and Choreographer, Deneane Richburg (Brownbody)
  • Associate Artistic Director, Lela Aisha Jones (Brownbody)
  • Composer & Sound Designer, Alex Shaw
  • Several artists featured in the work

This screening is part of "Keep it Moving," a program honoring choreographer Merián Soto's 25 years of creative research at Temple University's Department of Dance. Early arrival is suggested.

January 16, 2025 8:30PM MARUJA LIMÓN at World Cafe Live

 


MARUJA LIMÓN is a six-member band from Barcelona that mixes flamenco, pop, and Latin rhythms. Their debut album 'Más de ti' (2018) was acclaimed by magazines such as Mondo Sonoro and Muzikalia, and the band won the 'Best Emerging Artist' award at the Premis ARC 2018 and a LAUS Award for their music video 'Aprender'. In 2019, they released 'Ante Mí', considered one of the best Spanish albums of the year and nominated at the MIN 2020 Awards. In 2022, they presented their third album 'Vidas', which blends various genres with lyrics that reflect life stories. They have performed over 200 concerts and participated in prestigious international festivals. In 2023, they presented ''Esta noche no me acuesto'', a show that celebrates popular culture and collective connection. That same year, they were selected for the prestigious ʻVISA FOR MUSICʼʼ festival in Rabat. In 2024, the band presents ʻTe como la caraʼ part A, an EP where the Barcelonans delve into rumba in all its forms. We will release the part B this October. They toured Germany, France, Austria, and they visited NEW YORK for the first time this July thanks to LAMC; their show at DROM was a blast. Thanks to that, the band was featured in ʻOn the Radar' Latinʼs Billboard section.

Eban Brown, Former Lead Vocalist of the Stylistics, Musician, Jazz Guitarist, Producer, Actor

Born and Raised in Newark, New Jersey, Harold Eban Brown is a World -Renowned Guitarist, Composer and Singer. In 1991, Eban Brown became the Lead Vocalist for his idol artist group Ray, Goodman & Brown (Betterknown as the Moments), He continued to perform with the group for two and a half years. Later Eban would become a member of the one time grammy-award winning group: the Manhattans (featuring Gerald Alston and Blue Lovett) His Stay was Short lived Due to future accomplishments. In 1993, Eban became the lead vocalist of the delfonics, and was the first lead vocalist of the delfonics to be inducted into the 98.7 Kiss FM Hall of Fame in new York City, the Naacp Hall of Fame,in Atlanta, GA, and in 1996, received a NAACP.
