Enjoy an evening of art, live music, film, cocktails, and light fare at our monthly First Friday mixer. This month’s event is presented in partnership with the Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival (PHLAFF), which celebrates the extraordinary work of emerging and established Latine/x/a/o filmmakers, musicians, and artists. The program features music by Yasser Tejeda as well as short films from this year’s festival and includes access to our second-floor collection galleries.

Yasser Tejeda is an award-winning Dominican composer, guitarist, vocalist, and producer. Tonight he will perform music from his latest album, La Madrugá—Afro-Caribbean compositions that fuse traditional styles with merengue, jazz, and rock. Later in the evening, DJ Bobby Flowers will play a set on the West Terrace.

Come by Notsolatin on tuesday, June 3rd for a special night of music as we invite the incredible Paul Cornish and his trio to our stage!! Los Angeles-based pianist and composer Paul Cornish strives to inspire freedom and collaboration in his music and community. Hailing from Houston where he was a student at the prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Cornish was one of seven jazz prodigies worldwide selected to be awarded a full fellowship to attend the esteemed Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz at UCLA. He comes to Philly fresh off travelling with Joshua Redman and we couldn’t be happier!

This month, we're celebrating the rich musical traditions of bomba and plena with special performances by Los Bomberos de la Calle. The talented group returns to the Barnes after their captivating 2023 performance with an expanded lineup that promises to get crowds up and moving! Join us for an interactive and immersive performance that honors the vibrant musical heritage of Puerto Rico.

Performances by Los Bomberos de la Calle

Celebrate the musical heritage of Puerto Rico with Los Bomberos de la Calle. This dynamic Philly-based dance group has been blending traditional and contemporary styles of bomba and plena music for the past 13 years. Led by founder and director Anthony Mendez, they have shared their soulful music at venues like the Mann Center and Kimmel Center, as well as local events such as the Hispanic Heritage Festival, Mummers Parade, and Feria del Barrio Festival. Their mission to preserve Puerto Rican traditions continues at the Philly Bomba Plena Cultural Center, where they raise funds and offer community programming.

Philly Gumbo’s distinctive blend of New Orleans R & B, funk, reggae, blues and soul has made it a unique and popular presence on the Philadelphia music scene for thirty years. Over the years, the band has been a “Best Of” selection by Philadelphia Magazine in their annual “Best Of Philadelphia” issues as well as having played most of the top venues in the area such as The Kimmel Center, The Sellersville Theater and World Café Live and such major events as the Atlantic City Summer Jazz Festival, Musikfest, Jambalaya Jam, Jam On The River, WRTI-FM’s Groovin’ In The Park, the Media Blues Stroll, The West Oak Lane Jazz & Arts Festival and many more. Philly Gumbo has opened for such greats as Dr. John, Buddy Guy & Jr. Wells, Rick Danko & Levon Helm of The Band and Mutabaruka. The Roots Picnic returns to the Mann in Fairmount Park for two days of music, art, and culture on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1!
 
Multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning R&B titan D’Angelo will headline the landmark festival alongside The Roots, marking the Black Messiah musician’s return to Roots Picnic. Meanwhile, 4x GRAMMY Award-winning artist and all around multi-hyphenate icon Lenny Kravitz will take the stage to perform hits across his decades-spanning oeuvre as well as his latest studio album Blue Electric Light. Philadelphia legend Meek Mill will also make his first appearance on the Roots Picnic stage.
