October 6, 2014 5:30-8:30 PM "The Big Hurrah" Annual Fundraiser for LiveConnections at World Cafe Live PHL

The BIG Hurrah
an annual benefit for LiveConnections

We're having a hard time deciding what's going to be
the best part of our upcoming party on October 6.

Will it be the amazingly talented artists on stage, collaborating across genres and styles for some downright fun music-making...

Will it be the Philly students showing off the percussion skills they've learned in our programs...

Will it be the delicious food and drink and relaxed atmosphere
of our favorite partner venue World Cafe Live...

Will it be that proceeds support our innovative, boundary-crossing music programs all season long?...

Or will it be because YOU are going to be there to share in the fun!!

October 3, 2015 8:00 PM Edmar Castaneda Trio with Andrea Tierra at The Painted Bride Art Center

Colombian-born jazz harpist Edmar Castaneda has developed a reputation among critics as a virtuoso, known for playing lead, rhythm, and bass with just one instrument and his two hands.

“His music draws on the traditional joropo music of the grasslands he absorbed early, as well as tango, Brazilian and flamenco guitar, West African kora and virtuoso jazz pianists like Art Tatum. That’s a fascinating mix, but his technique is the real astonishment. Castañeda juggles lead, rhythm and bass lines, using a variety of hard and soft string attacks to keep those voices distinct — all without giving up the groove.” – NPR Music
On October 3rd, Castaneda plays the Bride for the first time.

Castaneda’s journey has humble, inspiring beginnings. The son of a musician, Castaneda grew up embracing the noble folkloric traditions of his native Colombia. The joropo dance classes he attended with his sister were a masterclass in movement, accompanied by the harp. In the mid-1990s, he moved to New York and studied jazz trumpet, before returning to the harp. Today, on stages all over the world, the harpist crafts almost unbelievable feats of cross- rhythms, layered with chordal nuances to rival even the most celebrated flamenco guitarists, and an incredible blend of musical influences.

In addition to his acclaimed performing career as an instrumentalist, which has included features at D’Rivera’s Carnegie Hall tribute, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, the 10th annual World Harp Congress, he has also played with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, John Scofield, Marcos Miller, John Patitucci, Chico O’Farrill ‘s Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band and Edmar Castaneda has gained recognition as a composer.

The Edmar Castaneda Trio is Edmar Castaneda (harp), Sholomi Cohen (saxophone), Dave Silliman (drums), and special guest Andrea Tierra (vocals).

October 1, 2014 12:00 PM GriotWorks' Griot Sway Youth Music Video Online Release

Griot Sway is a hot new rap by kids that celebrates African American heritage and culture. The contributions go towards the costs of of the music video and the video release party.
Why A Rap, by kids?

1) We think it's important to bridge gaps between the old and the new. Celebrating oral traditions through rap is a perfect formula.

2)Because kids want to rap words that make them proud of their heritage

3) Because parents don't want their kids repeating the raps on the radio

4)Because kids and parents should be able to rap together, nod their heads together and dance together while celebrating African American culture.

Join the community of sponsors by BUYING the song through our campaign and contributing to the project.

The music video will be released online Wednesday, October 1st at 12:00pm!

September 27, 2014 8:00 PM Rebellum ( A Project of Burnt Sugar Arkestra) at The Painted Bride Art Center

Burnt Sugar Arkestra's Rebellum project started as an exercise in “radical conformity,” says conductor and guitarist, Greg Tate. The Harlem-based band challenged themselves to pack their sprawling sound into more traditional, radio-friendly tunes. What emerged was The Darknuss, a 20-track debut LP packed with what they’re calling “snarky protest songs, wry race music and romantic warrior anthems.” The name ‘Rebellum’ came after, a necessary rebrand for the band’s segue into original music.

Burnt Sugar fans needn’t worry—Rebellum is no less spontaneous or theatrical because of its creative constraints. In fact, Tate says the Rebellum show has produced a different kind of drama–a surprising new level of showmanship.
