He'll be joined by my friend and co-composer Victor Pablo and his string quartet and two other amazing percussionists Christian Noguera and Andrés Cisneros.This performance is free but space is limited! Tickets can't be reserved ahead of time but are available that day at The Barnes starting at 9am.

“My chief motivation as a tap dancer is to use the jazz tap form to pique people’s imagination, curiosity, emotions, and intellect through exploration of themes that are literary, historical, and social.” - Germaine Ingram

At age 33, Germaine Ingram (b. 1947) took up dance under the tutelage and mentorship of the late LaVaughn Robinson (a 1992 Pew Fellow in the Arts), a Philadelphia tap legend. Since then, she has become a major figure in contemporary jazz tap, following in the tradition of her forbearers while breaking new ground in the art form through oral history, filmmaking, and stage production, in addition to performance and choreography. Ingram’s work addresses social justice and historical narratives, as well as various aspects of the African-American experience, through projects such as Parallel Destinies. An internationally known solo performer, Ingram has received fellowships and awards from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Independence Foundation, and the Leeway Foundation. Ingram’s project grants in dance awarded support her work bridging movement practice with social issues. Her artistic practice strives to situate dance as part of a larger public discourse, serving as another method to uncover stories effaced in official historical records concerning race, politics, and social relationships dealing with class.

Have you ever wanted to jam with your favorite musician? I mean, you've been going to all the shows, and you know all the songs. Would you like to participate in how the artist creates their signature grooves and melodies, transcending genre, developing musical arrangements and lyrics, blending traditional and unconventional soundscapes?
Well, that is the essence of "THE JAM JAWN".

This month, the jam will be led by musician, dancer, singer, and educator, Gab Guma.

Gabriele Guma, a.k.a. Gab Guma
The guy with the big afro and the weird accent, Ethiopian-born and Italian-raised Gab Guma, is a professional dancer (formerly with Philadanco), teacher and singer and musician. He is best known for his previous work as lead guitarist, writer and front man of his own Philly-based rock/soul band GAB GUMA & Tangible Truth, the hip hop group Tangled Thoughts , the hip hop/rock band GrindCity and now, Stereotytans. While developing the sound and concept of his new heavy rock band Stereotytans ,Gab has been recording an extensive catalogue of songs in anticipation of his highly anticipated solo project under the guidance of Westtown Entertainment.
Gab has toured for most of his life as both a dancer and musician. In recent years he toured with hip hop/soul legend Ms. Lauryn Hill, playing alongside legendary bassist Doug Wimbish. Gab has toured with Grammy Award-Winning band Living Colour and N.E.R.D. His great musical range allowed him to also share the stage with major artists of all genres including Method Man, Nas, Mob Deep, Ciara,Kindred, Take 6, Wayna, Syleena Johnson, Eric Gales, Silvertide, Marc Rizzo (of Soulfly), Carol Riddick, Bryant Pugh and Floetry to name a few. Gab is a highly respected and sought after musician for live performance and studio work.
Gab has developed into a versatile guitarist who uses the guitar as his second language. Gab draws influences from Jimi Hendrix to Steve Vai, Carlos Santana to Miles Davis, Slash and Tom Morrello to classical composers into his own signature riffs, unique sound and passionate solos all while displaying a very energetic physical live performance. With a style that is constantly evolving, the ambition to reach new musical hights and the desire to tell his unique story, Gab is excited to realize his life long dream to merge his passions, his cultural influences and various talents into an eclectic and unique expression of love and positivity.

This is going to be EPIC!

Arrastão do Dendê: Afro-Brazilian Samba Percussion & Dance Troupe
The Arrastão do Dendê was formed in 2000 by Dendê, an Afro-Brazilian percussionist from Bahia. Having been a long-time member of the band Timbalada, Dendê has peformed extensively throughout Brazil, Asia, Europe and the US.

His Arrastão performs traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms as well as his own creations. With members from Brazil as well as many other countries from around the world, the group can be accompanied by singers and dancers. They have been featured in performances all over New York including the Copacabana, BAMCafe, SOBs, Galapagos, Walker Stage and New York City's Halloween Parade.

This class will engage and inspire families with an exciting and interactive workshop featuring Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Dendê will provide a variety of instruments for children to explore while they learn to play traditional Afro-Brazilian rhtyhms, sing in Portuguese and dance along as they play.

Open to all ages, but please be sure that your child has an interest in playing drums. Parents are encouraged to participate as well. Cost is $10 per child.

Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher and multi-instrumentalist who specializes in teaching and performing music from Afro-Brazilian traditions as well as many others of the African diaspora. He has performed around the U.S. and internationally with his ensembles Ologundê, Samba de Três, Arrastão do Dendê and Dendê & Band.
