Asian Arts Initiative (Salon Space): 1223 Vine St., Philadelphia, PA The "Pandeiro Repique Duo" is a remarkable combination of two of the most common percussion instruments of the "Carioca-Soul"- the soul of Rio de Janeiro: the pandeiro and the repique. PRD percussionists Bernardo Aguiar (pandeiro) and Gabriel Policarpo (repique) creatively unite these classic Brazilian instruments to produce a sound transcendent beyond their regional origins. Watch PRD's New Video!!! http://vimeo.com/54026968 Bernardo and Gabriel will offer two exciting workshops that feature their music al concepts as a duet, presenting innovative approaches to playing and creating compositions on the pandeiro and repique. Bernardo demonstrates how the pandeiro is truly a "pocket drum set" capable of playing practically any rhythm, and Gabriel, equally versatile with the repique, introduces participants to a new contemporary language in the world of samba. In these hands-on workshops, Pandeiro Repique Duo (PRD) share their original compositions with students, using pandeiros, repiques, other samba instruments, and even body language. Though rooted in the samba school tradition of Rio de Janeiro, their rhythmic cosmos encompasses many other Brazilian and universal rhythms. Please bring your pandeiro and/or repique if you have one. There are also limited instruments available.
