April 26, 2014 8:00-11:30 PM Venissa Santi and her Band at Chris' Jazz Cafe
Vocalist Venissa Santi with Francois Zayas, John Stenger, Jason Fraticelli, Chris Aschman, Tim Thompson, and Cuco Castellanos.
Voted one of the best Latin Jazz Albums of 2013, "Big Stuff: Afro-Cuban Holiday" is Venissa's tribute to Billie Holiday. Latin Jazz says: "Just what is so special about the vocalastics of Venissa Santi—just what is so singularly unique—is so eminently clear on Big Stuff—Afro-Cuban Holiday, the brilliantly innovative follow-up to her 2009 Sunnyside Records debut, Bienvenida. If at first blush this record appears to be a mere tribute to the great Billie Holiday, it is clear that first impressions can be somewhat deceptive. True, this is Ms. Santi’s homage to the legendary singer. However the music on this record comes from the very depth of Ms. Santi’s soul…".

Since their first album in 1995, Los Amigos Invisibles have developed a sound based on the “gozadera” – an irresistible fusion of Latin rhythms with fiery funk and lounge music. The band got their first break when David Byrne (Talking Heads) discovered one of their albums by chance in a Manhattan record shop. He immediately called the band up in their native Venezuela and soon after, signed them to his label: Luaka Bop. Byrne opened doors for the band across the globe and Los Amigos Invisibles soon became an international touring machine.
Los Amigos Invisibles moved to New York City from their hometown of Caracas in 2001 and entrenched themselves in the local scene. With their electrifying live show, the group began building a considerable fan-base across the U.S. collaborating with artists such as Louie Vega (Masters At Work), Dimitri From Paris, Natalia Lafourcade, Cachorro López and Jorge Gonzalez, among others. Los Amigos Invisibles were able to establish themselves in the international dance music scene and expand their sound, while raking in Grammy nominations year after year and performing all over the globe as well as on television shows like The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

"Plucking her custom-built charango, Latina folk-rocker Gina Chavez is heralded as the Joni Mitchell of Latin music. Her newest album, “Up.Rooted” - produced by Michael Ramos (Ry Cooder, John Mellencamp, Charanga Cakewalk), and featuring guest appearances by Grupo Fantasma, among others - debuted at #2 on Amazon’s new music charts upon release in February 2014. Gina Chavez delivers a very soulful, sincere vibe in her live performances, easily sweeping into international musical waters with touches of bossa nova, cumbia, arabic, and even big ballad melodies. Rosa Diaz's music could be classified as indie or alternative, but the truth of her style resists labels. Featuring elements of campfire love ballads, shoegaze pop, and folkloric latin genres, her style allows her unique vocals to range from soaring harmonies reminiscent of soothing church hymns to hypnotic siren wails. With insider comparisons to folk-rock pioneers such as The Cocteau Twins & Aimee Mann, Rosa Diaz is poised to explode in the global folk music arena. Both of these phenomenal acts are cherished by National Public Radio (NPR), and are guaranteed to win over your hearts as well. Luckily we’re giving you two chances to be musically wooed, in New York City and Philadelphia. Don't fight the feeling!"

After 4 years touring in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia as bassist in several Latin bands, Bronson Tennis returned to Philadelphia to form his own band. De Tierra Caliente: a fusion of Brazilian, Caribbean and American rhythms with catchy melodies and unaffected lyrics. While traveling and learning the languages of Caribbean and Brazilian musicians, Bronson began to mix his American roots with Afro-Latino rhythms to inspire an undeniably fun North/South American dance party.
De Tierra Caliente bridges Philadelphia's "boricua" (Puerto Rican) and "gringo" communities, as Bronson is joined by Puerto Rican percussionist and Philly Salsa icon, Edwin "Papo Buda" Rosado, who for decades has performed with local groups such as the Latin Playboys and Saboricua and has appeared with the world-renowned Gran Combo de Puerto Rico. Papo and his red-headed gringo apprentice Tim Leslie are an unlikely duo of bearded percussionists, laying down powerful Latin grooves that make it impossible to stay in your seat.
De Tierra Caliente, which means "from hot land," delivers the sabor, spice and alegrÃa of warm-weather Latin American countries to audiences in the northeastern US, where formidable winters and nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic sometimes overshadow simple pleasures like sharing a meal with friends or going out dancing. At a De Tierra Caliente show, you can't help but warm up as intoxicating songs in Spanish, English and Portuguese sing out the bright colors and familial heat of a South American kitchen.

Les Frères Guissé
Toucouleur folk music from Northern Senegal
“For Les Frères Guissé, there was no issue that could not be overcome, with sweet harmonies, acoustic guitars, and a faith that music and hope go hand in hand.” - Austin Chronicle
Video, tickets, and more information at crossroadsconcerts.org
Djiby, Cheik and Aliou Guissé originate from Fouta Tooro, a northern region of Senegal that is also the birthplace of the singer and guitarist Baaba Maal. Based on different rhythms of the Toucouleur people (such as the Yela, whose weak first and stressed third beat said to be the ultimate ancestor of reggae) the Guissé brothers music is universal, for all ages and races.
his music is beautiful, sensitive, and well rooted in the traditions of West Africa. Djiby’s and Cheikh’s poetic lyrics, close harmony singing, and melodic acoustic guitars are joined by Aliou’s gentle percussion and harmonica notes drifting in the wind. This trio of musical brothers comes from the Fouta region of northern Senegal. They sing in several Senegalese languages, especially Pular (Peulh), their mother tongue, which is spoken in numerous countries in the Sahel region of West Africa.
The three brothers began performing in the early 1980s, when they were still at school and Djiby joined the group Jiw Bagne (Seed of Refusal) as a singer. This group, consisting mostly of high school students, stood out for its highly-committed lyrics against the existing power structure.
Two years later, these students became the group Jamm (Peace). Cheikh joined as a back-up singer and Aliou a percussionist. They began playing in clubs, deepened their musical learning, experimented with various styles, and became part of several other groups. In 1991, Diby and Cheikh decided to launch their own group, which Alioune joined two years later and by the late 90s they had become one of Dakar’s most popular groups. They began touring and recording internationally in the early 2000s and have now performed in Africa, Europe, and America.
