May 30, 2014 5:00-8:45 PM Eleanor Dubinsky at "Art After Five" at The Philadelphia Museum of Art

World music artist Eleanor Dubinsky was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, but through traveling and living in Europe, Latin and South America, found the voice of her own emotionality in the languages and cultures of other nationalities. The NYC-based chanteuse speaks French, Spanish, Czech, Portuguese and Italian, but her most fluent communication skills are through music.

“I can have empathetic experiences in multiple cultures to create music that moves me and moves other people,” the singer-songwriter explains. “Through my art and music, I want to reach people that don’t get paid attention to—I want to connect people.”

Dubinsky’s music encompasses the sultriness of bossa nova, the longing of soul, the vulnerability of folk, and the earthy sophistication of jazz. The polyglot chanteuse has been favorably compared to Sade, Portishead, Brazilian Girls, and Joni Mitchell. Peter Johnson from KUNC FM 91.5 praised her “silky, sultry voice” and altruistic aspirations. “We were impressed by her sense of mission as an artist, and we couldn’t help swaying to her music!” Mishmash Magazine noted: “When it comes to the sweet tunes of the enchanting Eleanor Dubinsky, moments of love are explored with a sincerity so formidable that there’s a constant battle as to whether you should be seduced by something so achingly personal.” French Culture Guides named her “Best Up and Coming Francophone Singer in NYC.” Her songs have been featured on MTV, Lifetime and Animal Planet, ads for American Express, radio stations throughout Mexico, NPR, and her new song, “Wait For You,” recently won the Sennheiser recording contest at the 2012 ASCAP EXPO.

May 18, 2014 Noon to 9:30 PM Daylong "Jazz It Up" Festival at 7165 Lounge to Benefit Homeless Families

The Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network will be holding its second annual 'Jazz it Up' event on Sunday.

The daylong jazz festival at the 7165 Lounge in Mt. Airy will benefit the expansion of affordable housing options for low-income families in Philadelphia.

The event will kick off with a jazz brunch from noon to 3 p.m., followed by an afternoon jazz party and buffet. The day will close out with an "old-school dance party" from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. featuring DJ Mike Hurt.

"We felt that music could bring people in the community of varied backgrounds together for a good cause," said Justin Fink, who is producing the event. "The event also reflects the kaleidoscopic diversity of Philly's vibrant jazz community, and the generosity and philanthropic spirit of the musicians, most of whom are donating their time and talents."

The festival will feature a range of jazz styles including "Philly-style" hot brass from the New Sound Brass Band; soul from the Michael Beckham Quartet; Latin jazz from Pablo Batista's Mambo Jazz Express; Jewish jazz from The Fabulous Spielkehs and much more.
Proceeds from the event will support emergency services — including food, clothing and shelter — for homeless families in Philadelphia as well as helping to connect those ready to move from shelter to independent, family-friendly, affordable housing options in safe neighborhoods.

"The payoff is housing safety and security for children and families that can be sustained over time," said Fink.

Tickets are available by calling (215) 247-4663 ext. 102 or by visiting www.philashelter.org.

May 17, 2014 6:30 PM Dendê & Band at International House's "Colors of Brazil"

53rd Global Gala: Colors of Brazil
For more than 50 years, International House Philadelphia has held a Global Gala, during which a different country or region of the world is celebrated. Last year, we travelled to the Eurasian country of Armenia, a nation rich in cultural heritage and tradition, as well as a contemporary culture that includes riotous fun music, beautiful artwork, and inspired cuisine.

International House Philadelphia’s 53rd Global Gala: Colors of Brazil is channeling the rhythm of Carnaval for its main event on May 17th, and there is no better time to celebrate this amazing country! In the past year alone, Philadelphia took part in a Brazilian trade mission, which successfully brought new Brazilian business to our region while introducing Brazil to our historic city of Brotherly Love. With a direct flight from Philadelphia to Brazil on US Airways starting this year, its not a moment too soon as Brazil will host the World Cup this summer, and in two short years, the Summer Olympics. Brazil has long been the jewel of South America, and now it is opening itself up to the rest of the world.

Please join the IHP Board of Trustees, Community, Business, Civic, Government Leaders, and other Distinguished Guests for a festive cocktail hour, black-tie dinner, silent auction, entertainment, and dancing.

Cocktails & Silent Auction 6:30 pm

We'll be dancing the night away to the Afro-Brazilian party grooves of Dendê & Band!
Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been splitting his time between New York and Bahia, and has played with Mongo Santamaria, Giovanni Hidalgo, Zakir Hussain, David Byrne, and Vinicius Cantuária. His own bands include the folkloric music and dance troupe Ologundê, the acoustic Samba de Três, and Arrastão do Dendê, a traditional Afro bloco (samba party band), but it’s as leader and principal songwriter of his flagship band that Dendê has made his greatest impact.

The band, formerly called Hãhãhães, has been packing clubs and festivals throughout the US and internationally for the past five years most. The have been presented most notably by Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the World Music Institute, the Cedar Cultural Center, the Old Town School for Folk Music, Joe’s Pub, World Café Live and Johnny D’s among many others. They have been featured at festivals such as the Marquette Waterfront Festival in Madison, WI; the Lake Eden Arts Festival in North Carolina; the Kalalu Festival in Saint Lucia.

Collaborating Artists: Pablo Batista and the Mambo Syndicate, and Dennis Guevara (Pianist & Music Arranger)

About the Project: In collaboration with Dennis Guevara—pianist and arranger for Pablo Batista and the Mambo Syndicate—our concept is to fuse 3 genres of music: the ancient Bata rhythms of the Yoruba, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and jazz.
About Pablo Batista: Pablo Batista has performed, recorded and toured internationally for nearly 30 years with some of the biggest stars in rhythm and blues, jazz, Latin, pop and gospel. In 1991, while teaching at AMLA between tours, Pablo received his first grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. This enabled him to do folkloric research in Cuba under sponsorship of the Philadelphia Folklore Project. He went on to receive this award four times, and continued travel to Cuba to study under the masters Pello 'el Afrokan,' Roberto Vizcaino, Miguel 'Anga' Diaz and others. In 2000, Pablo was the recipient of the prestigious Pew Fellowship in Folk Arts. This enabled him to deepen his knowledge of the Afro-Cuban tradition at the source. Pablo Batista continues to study, practice, record, tour and teach. In 2010, after several previous tours and Grammy-winning recordings with soul mega-star Alicia Keys, he was back on the road with her "Elements of Freedom Tour." This culminated in a performance at the World Cup ceremonies in South Africa before an estimated combined live and broadcast audience of over one billion people. 2011 found him working on a new, innovative series of compositions and arrangements that seek to integrate African Yoruba elements into the more accessible musical styles with which he is so familiar, and so proficient. In this way, Pablo Batista hopes to make the tradition more widely accessible to new audiences of varied ethnic backgrounds and musical tastes, and to show how deeply the "Latin tinge" continues to inform and animate American popular music.
