El Caribefunk live music
Welcome to El Caribefunk, an exotic fusion of salsa, funk, and Caribbean music. A Colombian band with a fervent underground following in South America, El Caribefunk is on tour in the United States for the first time.
There are other non-musical activities while you're there:
1:30–3 pm
Fleisher Art Memorial hands-on activity
Take instruction from Fleisher Art Memorial teaching artists, as they lead still-life drawing in an art-making workshop inspired by the work of Paul Cézanne.
2–2:20 pm
Cézanne’s Still Lifes talk
The 69 works by Cézanne in the Barnes Foundation’s collection include 16 still lifes, all of which are on permanent display. This summer, 23 additional still lifes by the artist can be seen in The World Is an Apple: The Still Lifes of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition currently on view. Join Barnes docent Penny Hansen for a short talk on the significance of Cézanne’s masterful creations.
2:20–2:40 pm
Nature in Your Home demonstration
Pick up tips on bringing the beauty of nature indoors as Rachel Burlington, a Barnes Foundation gardener and the owner of Rachel’s Bouquet, demonstrates how to create thoughtful floral arrangements inspired by Cézanne. Materials include seasonal flowers and other items from the Barnes Arboretum in Merion.
Free tickets can be obtained on-site at the Barnes Foundation beginning at 9 am. Advance reservations are not available for Free First Sundays.
This offer is limited to tickets for two adults and two children per transaction. Tickets are limited and available on a first come-first served basis.
Tickets include access to the Collection gallery, special exhibition and any programming taking place that day.
The Barnes Foundation and PECO look forward to welcoming you to Free First Sundays!

August 2, 2014 8:00 PM El Caribefunk with Ryan Tennis at Peaceful Woodlands Campground in Blakeslee, PA
You should definitely plan on being at the campground on Saturday August 2nd!!
Brought to you by the kind, adorable and very talented Ryan Tennis, we are very excited to host this.....
El Caribefunk and Ryan Tennis, Saturday August 2nd. 8PM in the Rec Hall
Ryan Tennis, sometimes solo, sometimes with his clubhouse band is a rising star in the Philly Music Scene. He has released 3 CDs of his original tunes which are a mix of world rhythms, heartfelt and heartwarming songs, great stories and talented accompaniment with keys, horns, mandolin and more! He has toured extensively through the Philly area, many states and more recently has been all over the world and as far as Australia. You can't help but get caught up in the sound!
Take a listen for yourself - http://www.ryantennismusic.com/music.html
By traveling around the world, Ryan caught up with El Caribefunk! We are so glad he did!! Caribefunk is on a summer tour in the states but they call Columbia home. A four piece band with an eclectic mix of rhythms bringing in Salsa, Caribbean, Funk and more, your feet are sure to start moving before you realize it!! One interesting stop on their summer tour was the Penn's Museum of Archaeology, I'm sure even the mummies wanted to bust a move.

We are so excited about this show!! and hope you will join us in the Rec Hall. Free for campers. Open to the public $10.

July 26, 2014 6:00 PM 40th Street Summer Series Concert with Raphael Xavier W.O.R.X. Meets Bobby Zankel &The Warriors of the Wonderful Sound with The Avalon String Band
Raphael Xavier W.O.R.X. Meets Bobby Zankel &The Warriors of the Wonderful Sound This fusion act’s concept for this project is based on the idea that there are constant, fundamental elements of African American culture that transcend discipline, time period, style, and place of origin. They will examine and explore the notion that there are common spiritual and aesthetic principles and artistic devices and techniques that are utilized in parallel ways in music, and dance. They are looking to clarify the common thread that runs between music and dance, “Hip Hop and Be Bop”, “Breaking to the Avant Garde”.

July 25, 2014 9:00 PM West Philadelphia Orchestra with El Caribefunk at Ardmore Music Hall
El Caribefunk
Welcome to El Caribefunk—an exotic fusion of Salsa, Funk, and Caribbean music, where undeniable rhythm and poetry express intense color and feeling and inspire “alegría” in its listeners. This band of Colombians has built a fervent underground following with 2.5 years of nearly non-stop touring in South America. They’ve headlined festivals with acts like Bomba Estereo, played live on Colombian National Radio, and performed on national television programs like TeleAntioquia. Despite their burgeoning success they can still be found playing casually in the plaza or jamming with street musicians after a show.
West Philadelphia Orchestra
With a diverse line-up of professional Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today’s auto-tuned musical world. They began playing Romanian ballads, Macedonian folk-dance songs, Bulgarian wedding music, and Klezmer in late 2006, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original compositions which blend other sounds, like jazz and classical, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass, they inspire audiences to hold hands, dance, and slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.
Tickets $10 in advance; $12 day of show

They began playing Romanian ballads, Macedonian folk-dance songs, Bulgarian wedding music, and Klezmer in late 2006, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original compositions which blend other sounds, like jazz and classical, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass, they inspire audiences to hold hands, dance, and slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.

Fusing Trinidadian soca and calypso with Latin jazz, reggae, salsa, and American top 40, they have developed a sound all their own. Their unique and rhythmic arrangements of jazz and popular songs cast the steelpan in fresh new light, pushing the stylistic and artistic boundaries of an often-typecast instrument.

July 10, 2014 7:00-10:00 PM "This Planet is Doomed: A Sun Ra Celebration" at Penn Museum
Many know Sun Ra for his cosmic, avant-garde music and costumes, as well as his pioneering role in the Afro-Futurist movement, but there is not as much discussion of his sci-fi poetry. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sun Ra's arrival on Earth with an evening of poetry, futuristic sounds, and archival films in the Penn Museum's Lower Egypt Gallery, led by Pew Fellow CAConrad, writer Ras Mashramani, and Sun Ra biographer John Szwed, accompanied by the sounds of Buchla Music Easel pioneer Charles Cohen. DJs Anthony Campuzano and Jack Sloss close the night with an Afro-Futurist dance party tribute in the Kintner galleries. Presented in partnership with The Galleries at Moore and Ars Nova Workshop. Free admission.
Back in 1980, Sun Ra made a special appearance in the Penn Museum's Lower Egypt Gallery and offered his intergalactic philosophical musings on the bleak fate of Planet Earth for A Joyful Noise, Robert Mugge's jazz film about the prolific artist and his Arkestra.
