On Friday, July 11th, 2014, Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas (Raíces) will hold a special July Tertulia as part of the Conociéndote Project by Taller Puertorriqueño . Conociéndote is Taller’s 2013 John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Arts Challenge award-winning project, bridging Philadelphia’s audience divide with events and exhibitions in May, July, and September. Latinas in the Arts: Stories of Heritage and Inspiration will feature the lives and artwork of Latina artists living in our community and how their heritage and personal history live on through their work. The July Tertulia will feature an art show, a mural painting session, and two panels featuring Latina artists from our community.

Yolanda Alcorta, co-founder of Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas, will serve as the special guest presenter. Alcorta will be accompanied by a weaver from Concepcion Chiquirichapa, Guatemala, who will hold a weaving demonstration and demonstrate samples of her work. Vocalist Rosa Benitez will showcase a traditional Puerto Rican dress she made by hand whose design and craft were inspired and taught by her mother and grandmother in the 1950’s. Sonia Delgado, a Philadelphia painter, will show a series of paintings she created while on a journey of physical healing. Ana Palma will display a series of artwork inspired by her Mexican and Mayan roots. We are also pleased to present a series of photographs curated by Casa Monarca all taken by Latina photographers.
