"A House Concert & More since 1997"

Saturday Evening, December 3, 2016
Featuring

DANIEL WAPLES & DAN MULQUEEN

Daniel Waples - Hang in Balance
Daniel Waples is from London, he got his first HandPan in 2007, he supports himself as an independent musician whist spreading the gospel of the HandPan, an instrument associated with energy work and alternative healing, and one which he hopes will become a Symbol for universal peace and the Inner journeys all people take pursuing their individual Paths.

Dan Mulqueen is an American multi-instrumentalist hailing from New Jersey.
His approach to the handpan has lead to a very distinct and recognizable sound that is very much on the side of beat heavy and head bouncing rhythms.

His style comes from over 15 years as a drummer in many different genres. You can hear phrasing and rhythmic influences from each of these in his handpan music.

Dan has released 2 albums since 2013. You can listen to “Late Night Sound” and "Until I'm Ready" right now!http://www.facebook.com/DanMulqueenMusic

Mike Kennedy, a guitarist, composer, music educator, producer and arranger, has been performing in Philadelphia and the Mid-Atlantic regions since 1989 and continues stretching his boundaries. Mike’s varied musical interests have shaped the sound of his music in unique ways.
Mike Frank-Piano, Paul Gehman-Bass, Dan Monaghan- Drums, Mike Kennedy-Guitar, will be performing music that is inspired by the American landscape, in particular the native southwest.

Jamal Jones Big Band: Jamal Jones is a Philadelphia native jazz composer & arranger. Jones' original/contemporary 18 piece Large Ensemble will explore new creative territories of Big-Band music by including DJ/Sampling, effects & electronics and daring orchestrations, doublings, and intriguing mute combinations within the acoustic sections; all the while including a fusion of Hip-Hop grooves, Jazz swing, and Avant Garde. It consists of elite musicians and collegiate professors of Music throughout the Philadelphia and New York regions, and looks forward to introducing the Philadelphia area to an innovative sound for Big-Band.

November 20, 2016 7:00-10:00PM Exuberance: Elio Villafranca/Abdou Mboup Duo

20 years ago he was a young Cuban emigre percussionist/pianist. Today, he teaches at Julliard and regularly conceives and headlines programs for Jazz at Lincoln Center and venues around the world. Much of that in-between time Elio Villafranca spent in Philly and we love him here.

Striking to me is that in every encounter with Elio I have heard entirely different concepts and tonal palletes. It’s both the depth and the breadth of his mastery of classical, jazz, national and folkloric musics which permit him to curate programs of original compositions or arrangements of extant work that have a particular synthesis and stunning coherence.

Last year Elio debuted his spellbinding "Cinqué-Suite of the Caribbean" at the Appel Room, connecting melodies and rhythms of Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba to their Congolese roots with a powerful band of collaborators. Last month JALC presented the brilliant "Letters to Mother Africa," Elio’s curation of jazz works contemplating the lodestar of African identity—his own and those of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Max Roach, Eric Dolphy, Randy Weston, Charles Mingus, and Wayne Shorter. It was a profoundly persuasive program with a powerful band including Billy Harper, David Murray, Dezron Douglas and Lewis Nash.

But the highlight of the evening belonged to Senegalese percussionist Abdou Mboup, who sang and played a variety of instruments including the kora. His original composition “Nomad Land” drew a striking connection between jazz and Africa. Downbeat covered the show and Mboup’s role concluding:

Together, these musicians made it clear that the music of Africa, America and Cuba—though separated by miles of ocean—could be explored with penetrating closeness under the same moon.

As the review notes, the connection between Villafranca and Mboup is undeniable. But don’t take our word for it. Check out Elio Villafranca & Abdou Mboup Duet - From Havana to Senegal on YouTube. I think you’ll want to join us.

Vertical Current, also known as VC, was started in 2009 by trumpeter/composer Christopher Stevens, Donald C. Stevens Jr. (Bass) and Brandon Mullen (Drums). They were later joined by Ali Prawl (Keys) and Jordan Damiani (Guitar). Since forming in 2009, the band has worked with artists such as Jessica Reedy, Leah Smith, Jeff Murrell, Noel Gourdine, and Dezzie Neal. Some of the band's highlights include performing at the Lancaster Ave Jazz Fest, the Center City Jazz Fest, the Collingswood Mayfair, and opening for The Robert Glasper Experiment at World Cafe Live. Over the course of the last year or so the band has grown to include vocalists Chartel Findlater and Shelia Moser. VC has also been known to have a surprise guest on occasion. November 16, 2016 7:00-10:00 PM Pandeiro/Repique Duo and Friends at Rittenhouse Soundworks

From Rio
The Pandeiro Repique Duo & Friends Come To Philadelphia

About PRD/Mais (Pandeiro Repique Duo and more)

Bernardo Aguiar and Gabriel Policarpo ( PRD) are both steeped in the tradition of the Rio Samba Schools. They have a deep love, understanding and respect for that tradition and it forms the basis for their own compositions. Their exceptional percussive abilities have led them into new collaborations all over the world.

Since its inception, The Pandeiro Repique Duo have been making heads turn all over the world. How could two percussionists, playing such simple instruments make such a huge impact? This delicacy and nuance is usually reserved for the classical stage. In their performances, rhythms dance and timbres shift color as they move about the stage. Audiences are transported into a new understanding of rhythm as melody.

This time, the two brothers, Guillermo and Gustavo Oliveira (assistant directors of the Salgueiro Samba School in Rio De Janeiro) will be joining Bernardo and Gabriel of PRD. The ensemble also includes, (Master of the Timbau), Boka Reis and Brian Potts (Pandeiro, vibraphone and professor PhD from the University of Miami Music). As if that weren't enough, the great saxophonist and flutist Carlos Malta will be joining them for a once in a lifetime event here at Rittenhouse Soundworks.

The three musicians of Trio Da Kali hail from the Mande culture of Mali, from a heritage of distinguished griots, the caste of specialist hereditary musical artisans. They bring a fresh, contemporary, creative twist to their musical art, breathing new life back into this ancient tradition. November 12, 2016 8:00-10:30PM La Yegros: Cumbia from Buenos Aires in Arden, DE

La Yegros: Arden Concert Gild
La Yegros is a powerful presence in Buenos Aires underground scene her vibrant sound and unique voice, along with a larger-than-life performance presence, gives her the point-of-view of an artist with South American flair, but a global mindset.

La Yegros resides in the pulsing heart of cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, but her family hails from the tropical climates found in the rural rain forests of the north, bordering Brazil. She received classical, conservatory training in music and got her break when she played before thousands as part of the De La Guarda experimental theatre. Her debut album Viene De Mi features a wide spectrum of genres: tropical rhythms, Argentine folk, reggae, dancehall, soul, and arabic music.

Confident and vibrant in approach, shes been championed by MTV Iggy, as well as by Fader Magazine, who hailed La Yegros raw urgency while sounding completely relaxed and conversational. Listening to her sing, theres the swagger of a Kelis or even Jamaican dancehall combined with the indomitable homespun wisdom of a vintage soul queen, such as Laura Lee or Angie Stone.

Theres a sass to her singing, at once fresh and urgent yet aged in experience and attitude, that cuts through the male-dominated contemporary cumbia, drawing on both deep folk traditions and cutting edge beats.
