The Diaspora Drum Exchange is an exciting rhythmic exploration of the folkloric musical genres of the Afro-Caribbean Spanish language nations. Through the use of various percussion styles, such as plena and bomba, and hand-crafted instruments, with call-and-response singing & dance as language, this gathering will interweave the stories of cultural traditions and celebrations.

Curated by Philadelphia-based cultural producers AfroTaino, the event will spotlight two Afro-Puerto Rican groups, Los Bomberos de La Calle and Redobles de Cultura. Watch & listen as the musical dialogue builds: The 'conversation' that flows between them becomes an impulse for the community to congregate & celebrate to
this festive soundtrack. In collaboration with the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival, hand-selected shorts and clips of powerful movie moments in Latino cinema will bring much visual delight as the dusk settles.

This event is presented by the City's Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy as part of Performances in Public Spaces, a summer series of FREE cultural performances in parks and plazas across Philadelphia neighborhoods. From May through October, the annual series presents arts and culture experiences in local outdoor spaces.

It all takes place on:
Wednesday, July 24, 2019 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
(Rain date: August 7, 6-9pm)
Fairhill Square Park, 400 W. Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia
