February 6, 2020 7:00PM BLACK LIVES MATTER PHILLY WEEK OF ACTION BENEFIT SHOW

Black Lives Matter Philly Week of Action Benefit Show
This concert will feature African American performing artists in a celebration of Black Joy and Activism in Philadelphia. It is an opportunity to celebrate what public education truly means for Philly youth, families, and communities.
Proceeds of the ticket sales will go to the Black Educators Fund (co-sponsored by Black Lives Matter Philly and the Melanated Educators Collective), which is raising money to pay the out of pocket expenses teachers incur during the school year, provide resources to help educators decolonize their syllabuses, and make their classrooms accessible for students with disabilities.
Every year Philadelphia’s community of Black educators shrinks (Only 25% of the teaching force are Educators of Color), while our policymakers and elected officials fail to offer tangible solutions to this worsening problem. We know, Black teachers make a significant impact on the education of all students, but are particularly crucial to the education AND success of Black students, who have been historically underserved by America’s public education system.

February 5, 2020 7:30PM Leyla McCalla: Haitian-American Singer & Multi-Instrumentalist

Leyla McCalla
Biography
Leyla McCalla finds inspiration from her past and present, whether it is her Haitian heritage, living in New Orleans, dancing at Cajun Mardi Gras, or growing up on the streets in Brooklyn, she — a bi-lingual multi-instrumentalist, cellist and singer — has risen to produce a distinctive sound that reflects the union of her roots and experience.
Born in New York City to Haitian emigrant parents, Leyla was immersed in a meld of cultures from an early age. As a teenager, she relocated to Accra, Ghana for two years before returning to the States to study cello performance and chamber music at NYU. Armed with Bach’s Cello Suites, Leyla left New York to play cello on the streets of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Singing in French, Haitian Creole, and English, and playing cello, tenor banjo and guitar, her move allowed her to connect more viscerally to historical Haitian Creole resilience and musical expression. She rose to fame during her two years as cellist of the Grammy award-winning African-American string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, alongside bandmates Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons, before leaving the group in 2013 to pursue her solo career.
Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, as well as by American jazz and folk, Leyla’s music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty — it vibrates with three centuries of history, yet also feels strikingly fresh, distinctive and contemporary. Leyla’s debut album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes, was named 2013’s Album of the Year by the London Sunday Times and Songlines for its haunting mixture of music and message.

lonepinontrio.jpg
Biography
Lone Piñon is a New Mexican string band, or “orquesta típica”, whose music celebrates the integrity of their region’s cultural roots. With fiddles, upright bass, accordions, vihuela, mandolin, guitars, jarana huasteca, and vocals in Spanish, English, Nahuatl, and P’urepecha, they play a wide spectrum of the traditional music that is at home in New Mexico. The group was founded by Noah Martinez and Jordan Wax in 2013 and now also includes Tanya Nuñez.
In August 2018 they were invited by the Library of Congress and the American Folklife Center to Washington DC, where they recorded a concert and an oral history of their work with New Mexican and Mexican musical traditions. In 2019 they were honored to teach and perform Northern New Mexico fiddle and dance alongside traditional masters from across North America and Europe at Centrum’s Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, WA. An award-winning documentary about their work with traditional music, “En Donde los Bailadores se Entregan los Corazones,” has premiered at select screenings in the US and is planned for film festivals in the US and Mexico starting in late 2019. The band recently received the Parsons Award from the American Folklife Center, which will bring them back to the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2020 to study their collection of field recordings of Northern New Mexican musicians.
