November 3, 2022 6:00-9:00PM “Huey Mikailhuitl – La Gran Fiesta De Los Muertos” at FDR Park Boathouse

 


Fairmount Park Conservancy and Cesar Viveros invite you to “Huey Mikailhuitl – La Gran Fiesta De Los Muertos” – Day of the Dead art workshop and festivities!

Participants will learn about traditions and artistic practices of Mexico‘s Día de los Muertos, including a performance from an Aztec dance group, a special sugar skull making workshop, and an alter building demonstration using architectural elements of the historic FDR Boathouse. This event will also break the mold of tradition with some exciting new elements never before seen in Philadelphia, including a parade of artistically illuminated bicycles.

The festive evening includes a wide variety of activities, including:

ART

  • Sugar skulls workshop with altarista and community-based artist Ivonne Pinto
  • Día de los Muertos face painting with Sophia Mogollan-Pinto
  • “Tzompantli” altar installation (pre-Hispanic style) by community-based artist Cesar Viveros, assisted by artist Rosa Ruiz


ENTERTAINMENT

  • Aztec dancing with “Canpatlaneci Danza Azteca Del Anahuac”
  • Illuminated bicycle performance by “Champions Lowriders Club” de Tomas Flores and friends presenting “Sorpresas de la Noche”
  •  Appearance of “La Catrina” portrayed by Rosa Ruiz
  • Muertos music from DJ Sonido Ganzo


FOOD 

  • Grande pot of pozole (free!)
  • Hot ponche – with spices and fruits (free!)
  • Made to order Mexican food – tacos, burritos, and nachos (pay as you go)


Plus mercado mexicano with vendors selling their handmade crafts!
