In the years leading up to South Africa’s first democratic election, Katz created the Peace Train, a multicultural caravan of musicians that performed all over the country to share Nelson Mandela’s vision for peace. After Mandela’s election in 1994, Sharon Katz & the Peace Train toured the world as South Africa’s first musical ambassadors. Their humanitarian efforts continue today, most recently at the US-Mexico border.
Tonight, Sharon Katz & the Peace Train bring their joyous fusion of jazz, folk, rock, and African music to the Barnes.

“The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble are rock stars in the dance world.” (New York Post) As India’s premier dance troupe, The New York Times proclaims that “these are among the world’s greatest dancers” who frequently offer “one of the most extraordinary dance events of the year.” Now, joined by Sri Lanka’s acclaimed Chitrasena Dance Company, they perform the Philadelphia premiere of Ä€huti. Featuring live music and vibrant tradition, this full-length work explores the interconnection of rhythm, music and physical expression between the companies’ Odissi and Kandyan dance styles.
About Odissi
Originally a sacred ritual dedicated to the gods, Odissi is one of the oldest dance traditions in the world. Its sinuous forms, languorous limbs and rapt expressions tell of a past rich in dance, music, myth and legend.
About Kandyan Dance
Kandyan dance comes from Kandy, an area in the central hills of Sri Lanka. According to legend, the origins of the dance lie in an exorcism ritual performed by shamans from India, who came to the island on the request of a king suffering from a mysterious illness. After the performance of the ritual, the illness vanished, and the local people adopted the dance.

In this festival, the inhabitants of the municipality commemorate year after year three real or mythical events that have influenced and transformed the daily activities of the population. These events correspond to the first marriage between natives by the Catholic rite in New Spain, the kidnapping of the daughter of the corregidor by the mythical bandit AgustĂn Lorenzo, and the fight against the French intervention. This last event transformed the activities of this festival, where dances were replaced by the inclusion of groups that remember the battalions that participated in the battle of May 5, 1862 in Puebla.
From the Philadelphia Inquirer's Nate File:
"Thousands of celebrants, or “carnavaleros,” will first gather at 9 a.m. at 2300 Croskey St. between 22nd and 23rd Streets. Then at 12:30 p.m., a parade will begin, marching north from 22nd Street up to Washington Avenue. It will procede east to Sacks Playground, where the celebration continues with live music and food until 6 p.m."

What are Sevillanas? The Sevillanas are a colorful and exciting folkloric song and dance that is vastly popular in Andalusia and now throughout Spain. Today, the Sevillana is danced at get-togethers; whether it is the feria, a wedding, or at a family party where everyone present will join in. It is a celebration of community and being together with family, friends, and co-workers.
Join us outsdoors on what we hope will be a gorgeous late April afternoon. Consider wearing your Sevillanas' finest, (whatever that means to you), bring snacks and drinks to share, and dance Sevillanas with our Flamenco community. We hope to live stream some of the event and we will have special prizes for the best Sevillana costume!!!
We all know Nina Simone as an iconic creator and performer, but did you know she was a powerful voice for the Civil Rights Movement and used her music to address the issues of racism, segregation, and inequality that were prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s.
Her powerful voice and emotive performances made her music a rallying call for the Civil Rights Movement, and her songs continue to be celebrated as important pieces of the movement's cultural and historical legacy.
Join us as we pay tribute to her art and activism through song, dance, poetry and visual art.
