May 5, 2023 6:00-9:00PM First Friday at the Barnes: Sharon Katz and the Peace Train

Enjoy an evening of art, live music, cocktails, and light fare at our monthly First Friday mixer. Tonight, we’re proud to present Grammy-nominated South African musician and bandleader Sharon Katz. Born in Port Elizabeth during the apartheid era, Katz has used her music for social activism worldwide—including performances and recordings with Sting, Elton John, and Tina Turner.

In the years leading up to South Africa’s first democratic election, Katz created the Peace Train, a multicultural caravan of musicians that performed all over the country to share Nelson Mandela’s vision for peace. After Mandela’s election in 1994, Sharon Katz & the Peace Train toured the world as South Africa’s first musical ambassadors. Their humanitarian efforts continue today, most recently at the US-Mexico border.

Tonight, Sharon Katz & the Peace Train bring their joyous fusion of jazz, folk, rock, and African music to the Barnes.

Live music sets:
6:30 and 7:45 pm

First Friday at the Barnes includes access to the collection galleries and to Sue Williamson & Lebohang Kganye: Tell Me What You Remember.
