Family Fundays at the Kimmel (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM)
Entertain your littlest art lovers at the Plaza! Ignite imaginations with an array of enchanting performances and hands-on activities.
Son Jarocho performs Afroindigenous music and dance from the Gulf Coast of Mexico, featuring Ximena Violant.
Families will learn about the history and basic music, song, and dance of son jarocho, a tradition from the Gulf Coast of Mexico that has Southern Spanish, North and West African, and indigenous roots.
The participatory music performance involves several different traditional instruments and features well-known "sones" from the son jarocho tradition including La Bamba, La Guacamaya, El Colás, El Torito Jarocho, among others. Many sones have certain words in Spanish or basic dance movements that guests are guided to learn quickly and encouraged to recite and mirror. In between songs, guests will learn the history of the different instruments, from the strummed guitar, the "jarana", to the violin, to the plucked melody instrument, the "requinto".
