September 7, 2024 12:00-5:00PM PHonk!Philly's Brazil Day at Hawthorne Cultural Center

Join us on Saturday, September 7th, from 12 pm to 5pm at the Hawthorne Cultural Center “Brazil Day at Hawthorne Cultural Center,” an interactive cultural music and dance event produced by PHonk!Philly in partnership with the Hawthorne Cultural Center (@hawthorne_rec).
This event marks PHonk!Philly’s one-year anniversary of providing free cultural programming for adults, youth and Elders. Celebrate with us by participating in our free music and dance workshops.
In preparation for our Brazil Day at Hawthorne Cultural Center celebrations we have partnered with Melissa Corpus, Professional Dancer, Teacher, Choreographer and Founder of MeliSamba a group of professional Samba dancers based in Austin, Texas. Since 2010, Melissa has been teaching samba no pé focusing on footwork, technique, and the joy of the Brazilian spirit. Melissa has worked with Austin Samba, the largest samba school in the United States, as a choreographer, director, and principal dancer. She has traveled to Brazil to study Samba and share her learning experience with her students! Melissa has taught Samba workshops from the West to the East Coast, including the International Samba Congress in Los Angeles and Philadelphia and places in between. Melissa has also choreographed for Television shows (CW’s Walker) and provides dance class workshops for retreats, corporate events, and private classes. Her main goal is to respect and honor the Brazilian culture through movement, dance, and celebration.
We are thrilled to welcome Melissa to the PHonk!Philly family as our new Dance Director of our SambaSoul community class and performance group. Starting in August, our PHonk! Sambistas will dive into studying, training, and performing a stunning samba no pé choreography crafted by Melissa herself.
Mark your calendars for September 7th! Melissa will be joining us in Philadelphia to perform her choreography with our SambaSoul dancers and parade with us and the Hawthorne community. We are incredibly grateful to share this vibrant experience with the Hawthorne neighborhood and the greater Philadelphia community. Let’s make some magic together!
