From 2013-2019, in an effort to build our Philly tap dance community, I created "line dances" that were often performed around National Tap Dance Day or at festival events. The last community line dance I created was in 2019. I shut down Girard Avenue for the gathering, installed a large dance floor right on the corner of College Avenue and Girard, invited some jazz musicians and we certainly had a time. The event was covered by the Philadelphia Inquirer and Channel 6 and I thought, “let’s do it again in 2020!” Well, we all know what happened there.
Earlier this year, The Philadelphia Youth Tap Program moved to the Athletic Recreation Center, just a few blocks from where I had built my studio space over ten years of time. Having grown up in the Philly rec centers myself, I have absolutely loved having an artistic home there and being a part of the Athletic family, so much so that I decided to re-start the line dance tradition again.
I encourage you to join the next community tap dance! COME OUT TOMORROW, FRIDAY NOVEMBER 21, 1400 NORTH 26th STREET. Thanksgiving dinner will be on around 5:30 pm. My youth ensemble students will give a short performance around 6:15-6:30, and then we will move upstairs to learn the line dance and have some fun.
NO SHOES REQUIRED! This dance is for everyone. Bring a friend! I really hope to see you! And the learning and community will continue throughout the winter and spring, as we decide where to ‘premiere’ this 2025 community tap dance.
