Elliott Levin is a Philadelphia born and based poet and musician. He studied musical and literary composition at the University of Oregon. He has done further studies with Michael Guerra of the Phila. Orchestra; Cecil Taylor, pianist, composer, poet; Claire Polin, flutist composer; and Odean Pope, saxophonist, composer. Elliott has performed throughout the world with such groups as the Cecil Taylor Ensemble, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, New Ghost, Interplay, Talking Free Be-Bop, Odean Pope's Saxophone Choir, Don Preston's Akashic Ensemble, Cee-Knowledge & The Cosmic Funk Orchestra, Alan Silva's Sound Vision Orchestra. He has collaborated in performance with many poets including Miguel Algarin, Bob Holman, Gloria Tropp, Reg. E. Gaines, John Sinclair, Butch Morris' CHORUS OF POETS, Wil Perkins, Frank Messina and David Amram. His original music and poetry can be found on the recordings: OLDUVAI MUSIC ("Or-Om-You'll-Us" 1978), and ILTAR ("Ewe-Doh-Noh-What-Fo'-Kiss" 1979), on TIWA Records. He was the associate producer, composer, and performer for the compilations: POETRY IN PHILADELPHIA (1989), and MUSIC FROM PHILADELPHIA (1990). As producer, composer, performer, in 1990 and 1992, he created two internationally broadcast features for New American Radio.

The Arrastão do Dendê was formed in 2000 by Dendê, an Afro-Brazilian percussionist from Bahia. Having been a long-time member of the band Timbalada, Dendê has peformed extensively throughout Brazil, Asia, Europe and the US.
His Arrastão performs traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms as well as his own creations. With members from Brazil as well as many other countries from around the world, the group can be accompanied by singers and dancers. They have been featured in performances all over New York including the Copacabana, BAMCafe, SOBs, Galapagos, Walker Stage and New York City's Halloween Parade.

The Mandingo Ambassadors was founded in New York City by griot-guitarist Mamady Kouyate in 2005. As a veteran of the great orchestras of the golden age of Guinean dance bands, Mamady is a living library of musical science inherited from his ancestors and from a half century of experience as an arranger, band leader, accompanist and soloist. Mamady Kouyate carried this heritage with him to New York where he has collaborated with members of the West African diaspora and Western musicians to continue the great tradition and sound of Guinean Afro-jazz.
"The music of the Mandingo Ambassadors has been structured to make you feel good. It puts dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system: a locked drum groove, much of it played on high-hat cymbal and drum rims; soft bass lines that fall short or start late, or leave gaps in a run of notes; fingerpicked rhythm guitar notes like clear fizz.
(...)The friction between the elder Mr. Kouyate and the rhythm guitarist Mamady Kourouma, their phrases running together and pulling apart, drove the band. Mr. Kouyate's leads were high, trebly phrases, wet with echo, dipping occasionally for a run of authoritative low notes. Sikkil Gurucharan and Anil Srinivasan join the classical piano and Carnatic vocal music to create a new and “devastatingly beautiful” (John McLaughlin) synthesis. Their music presents and preserves South Indian classical music and appeals to both younger listeners with more experimental tastes and traditionalists with purist aesthetics. In a short span of time, they have gathered followers in India, Singapore, Australia, USA and Europe.
Sikkil C. Gurucharan is one of the prominent Carnatic (South Indian) musicians of the current generation. An an “A” grade All India Radio artist, he is the grandson of internationally acclaimed flautist Sikkil Kunjumani and studied under Vaigal Shri S. Gnanaskandan and Shri B. Krishnamurthy. While an established virtuoso of classical Carnatic music, Gurucharan is also well known for his work in other genres, including performing with guitarist John McLaughlin on Louiz Bank’s Grammy-nominated album “Miles from India,” which interpreted the work of Miles Davis though an Indian lens. His numerous honors include the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar and Isai Peroli awards.
Anil Srinivasan is a classical pianist born in Chennai, India and educated at the University of Southern California and at Columbia University, New York. Anil grew up in a South Indian traditional atmosphere where Carnatic music surrounded him from birth, and has studied western classical piano since the age of three. Anil has created a unique and contemporary aesthetic of his own, marrying Indian music to the unmistakable influence of the West in structurally complex yet intuitive and moving compositions.
M.T. Aditya Srinivasan is one of the young and up-coming tabla players from Chennai, India. He was initiated into Carnatic music and western piano at the tender age of 4 but a performance by maestro Zakir Hussain inspired him to find his calling in the tabla. He regularly performs and records with leading artists such as Vidhwan M.Balamuralikrishna, Vinayak Torvi, Rakesh Chaurasia, Sriram Parasuram, Anooradha Sriram, Anupama Bhagwat, Unnikrishnan, Ranjani and Gayatri, Sikkil Gurucharan, Anil Srinivasan, music director Anirudh Ravichander Priya Sisters, Srimati Manjusha Patil Kulkarni, Priya Purushothaman and many more. He has also been involved in many contemporary projects.

April 16, 2016 8:00 PM Minas Celebrates Reissue of "Num Dia Azul" at World Cafe Live PHL
Num Dia Azul was recorded in 1981 right after Orlando and Patricia finished their degrees at University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Right before they moved away from the area, where they lived for 7 years, Orlando and Patricia went into a studio inviting several musicians, whom they had been performing with for the past few years, to cut some tracks.
As stated by Patricia, “the music really caught the spirit of our youth when we were first diving into jazz and Brazilian music… it’s very interesting to hear some of the solos, some of the playing when you’re very young. It’s very much the essence of your playing years later, except you see that through the years you’ve developed skill and become more refined, but you really do see that the essence is so much there.”
Now Minas is reissuing Num Dia Azul on vinyl and CDs.

Minas will perform the album in its entirety for the first time since 1983. We're so excited about performing the music on this album that we added a sixth performer, the talented Brazilian percussionist Dendê. So the band now is comprised of: Orlando, Patricia, Steve Tirpak (trombone), Jim Stager (bass), and David Licht, the original drummer, one of the founders of the famous Klezmer group The Klezmetics.

Concerto in Sea Major: Aquacoustique
Concerto in Sea Major is the first concert to be performed in the water, as performed by French group Aquacoustique. The group's three musicians, Jean-Philippe Carde, Florent Lalet, and Stephane Gratteau, use found and recycled objects to create aqua-instruments for this unique performance taking place in select water fountains throughout Philadelphia. Performing belly-deep in water, Aquacoustique transforms snorkels into flutes and watering cans into saxophones, among other ingenious creations — including using water itself as a musical and rhythmic instrument — helping audiences to discover another side of the precious element.
This will be the American Premiere of Concerto in Sea Major.

Join us for an exhibition of photos and documents on loan from the Charles L. Blockson Collection that explore Philadelphia during the early decades of the 20th century. Also, listen to oral histories recorded in the 1970s and 1980s by men and women who made the Great Migration. These oral histories were recorded by Charles Hardy, Diane Turner, Donna DeVore, Jacquie Carlisle and H. Garrett. They are part of Goin’ North: Tales of the Great Migration, edited by Charles Hardy and Jannekan Smucker.
The Great Migration exhibit at Scribe is curated by Gary Smalls.
