June 27, 2013 and July 11, 2013 7:30 PM Two Sessions of African Drumming with Quint Lange
African Drumming Classes with Quint Lange
Hey Drummers, Quint here….So the next two sessions at Ron’s (tonight,6/27 and in two weeks, 7/11) will be a little more relaxed. We generally spend six weeks digging into a rhythm and learning many parts and variations, but I’m going to keep it simple for these next two classes, which will be an excellent opportunity for those of you who’ve been interested but didn’t want to do the entire six weeks for whatever reasons. If you are not familiar with the “gun do-do pa-ta” technique I am offering free early sessions at 6:30 to give you the tools to then play in class, please let Ron know if you will be coming for that. Tonight we’ll be learning “Kpan Logo”, a Ghanaian rhythm that has a part for everyone to play regardless of skill level, and also lends itself to improvisation. ‘Hope to see you there. Peace, Quint
If you hadn't already signed up for these classes ...
$20.00/drop in - Thursday evenings 7:30pm - 9:00pm at my home 1012 E Southampton Ave Wyndmoor PA 19038
Sign up now by contacting - ron@musicinthemoment.com or 215 233 0777
ANY level of experience is welcome!
The schedule after these next two classes will be made up and sent out soon.

June 20, 2013 7:30-9:00 PM Introduction to Clave’ in Four with Joe Machamer
The purpose of this class is to have lots of fun through a review of Son, Rumba, and Bossa Nova clave’ patterns and the further internalization of these essential rhythms. These goals will be accomplished through a series of exercises such as clapping while stepping to the downbeat, hand-to-hand accenting, playing clave’ on the ago-go while stepping to the downbeat, locating clave’ inside of certain rhythms, and identifying clave’ in traditional ethnic and popular American music. The class will conclude with an attempt to play an arrangement in the style of Samba-Reggae as heard on the song “Obvious Child” from Paul Simon’s CD “Rhythm of the Saints”.

June 12, 2013 9:00 PM Grupo Fantasma at The Blockley featuring PhillyBloco
Grupo Fantasma
PhillyBloco
PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.
Our music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. We want to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate every time they see us perform!
Grupo Fantasma
The intrepid members of Grupo Fantasma have been doing things their own way for over a decade now, which continues with the highly anticipated and self-produced El Existential out May 11, 2010 on Nat Geo Music. An exceptional followup to their Grammy nominated Sonidos Gold (2008), this new effort's love for exploration using the sounds and fundamentals of traditional Latin styles is uniquely reminiscent of Fania Records; and GF, like Fania's staple of artists in its prime, has been on the corner long enough to not only be tough, resilient and self-assured, but also be mature enough to turn out top quality material repeatedly on its own terms.
For El Existential the band opted to bypass the traditional studio route and installed a custom built facility in a three bedroom rental house in their hometown of Austin, Texas. Their goal: to immerse themselves in a collectively occupied homestead so they could create communally in a non-corporate, domestic atmosphere engineered to foster collaboration and experimentation. Special guests on the album include the legendary pianist Larry Harlow (who also appeared on Sonidos Gold) and guitar wizard Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets.
Thematically, there are several references to web-spinning spiders which in Afro-Diasporic folkore is a trickster, a story-weaving teacher and above all a symbol of resourceful survival. Lyrics touch on sinners, seductresses, and self-searching, with a bit of spiritual advice, revenge, and reconciliation added for good measure. Musically, unraveling spools of cumbia, salsa, son montuno, Afro-funk, psychedelia, bolero, jazz, folkloric, cinematic soundtrack and even startling hints of new wave integrate naturally with the touch that only GF can provide. Every cut is animated with this rare analog spark that makes the whole thing warm and hand-made, especially in an era when so much Latin music is created in a teflon laboratory by robots pretending to be de la calle.
The collective power of Grupo Fantasma is what makes this orchestra such a treat live. But their bundle of differences, that is itself an apt metaphor for the Latino experience in the USA, coheres quite well on El Existential. Expect delicacies on this record from incredible vocals to insane brass cavalcades, propulsive guitar and smoking percussion workouts. To enumerate all their individual charms would almost kill the collective thrill of first hearing the songs in sequence. Once you've heard El Existential, you'll realize it's so good that it's hard to keep quiet about it.

“If you have never danced to a live Latin band, you have never danced salsa.”
- Jesse Bermudez, Salsa Caliente co-producer
Old City’s only nightlife scene featuring two Latin big bands at each event returns for its third season offering everyone a special opportunity to immerse themselves in tropical flavors. Before the party swings into full action, maestro Flaco of Flaco’s Dance Factory is standing by to guide beginners through their first instructional dance steps.
THE VISION / HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED
Looking to shake things up, the Bride’s programming team scheduled a sit down with long-time community partner Jesse Bermudez, founder of La Asociación de Músicos Latino Americanos (AMLA). Known for championing cultural and educational commitments within the Latino community and his extensive regional network of Latin musicians/orquesta, Jesse proposed creating a nightlife scene where Latin music and culture could be shared with people from all walks of life. Jesse’s vision recalls the hot salsa nights during the golden era of Latin dancing at the Palladium Ballroom in the 50’s where bands were both the sticky factor and driving force of the social scene. While plenty of nightclubs in the tri-state have a Latin night, today’s dominating trend surrounds the DJ. As national television programs continue to highlight Latin dance styles (Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance), the love for salsa music and dancing gains mainstream popularity once again. Alongside Bermudez, the Bride is pleased to present the third dynamic season of Salsa Caliente. Come join the party!
