June 25, 2014 8:00 PM DANILO PEREZ: PANAMA 500 FEATURING BEN STREET, ADAM CRUZ, ROMAN DIAZ AND ALEX HARGREAVES at World Cafe Live PHL
In 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama, becoming the first European to reach the Pacific Ocean and founding the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. Those events continue to resonate five centuries later as Panama celebrates the landmark anniversary. On his new Mack Avenue release Panama 500, favorite son Danilo Pérez adds his voice to the tributes with a stunning portrait of his native land, its storied history, rich culture and fierce struggles.
Panama 500 is Pérez’ most ambitious project to date, the furthest evolution yet of what the pianist/composer calls “three-dimensional music.” His blend of influences makes him the ideal musical chronicler of his country’s history: already a land bridge between the Americas with a vibrant indigenous culture, Panama also began to absorb European culture into its own following Balboa’s arrival. Pérez similarly weaves together jazz and Pan-American folkloric traditions with influences from European classical music.

June 20, 2014 9:00 PM - 12:00 Midnight Latin Dance Party with Somewhere South and De Tierra Caliente at Bryn Athyn Civic and Social Club
This Friday! Brahm and Bron's Latin Party bands hit Bryn Athyn this Friday! No Cover, just fun and dancing.
Brahm's band, Somewhere South is a captivating mix of funk, rock, ska and latin music. Bronson's band, De Tierra Caliente, mixes American roots with Afro-Latino rhythms to inspire an undeniably fun North/South American dance party (full bio below).
Somewhere South plays at 9:30, De Tierra Caliente hits at 10:30. Come join the fun!
**********
After four years touring Argentina, Brazil and Colombia as bassist in several Latin bands, Bronson Tennis returned to Philadelphia to form his own band. De Tierra Caliente: a fusion of Brazilian, Caribbean and American rhythms with catchy melodies and unaffected lyrics. While traveling and learning the languages of Caribbean and Brazilian musicians, Bronson began to mix his American roots with Afro-Latino rhythms to inspire an undeniably fun North/South American dance party.
De Tierra Caliente bridges Philadelphia's boricua (Puerto Rican) and gringo communities, as Bronson is joined by Puerto Rican percussionist and Philly Salsa icon, Edwin "Papo Buda" Rosado, who for decades has performed with local groups such as the Latin Playboys and Saboricua and has appeared with the world-renowned Gran Combo de Puerto Rico. Papo and his red-headed gringo apprentice Tim Leslie are an unlikely duo of bearded percussionists, laying down powerful Latin grooves that make it impossible to stay in your seat.
De Tierra Caliente delivers the sabor, spice and alegría of warm-weather Latin American countries to audiences in the northeastern US, where formidable winters and nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic sometimes overshadow simple pleasures like sharing a meal with friends or going out dancing. At a De Tierra Caliente show, you can't help but heat up as intoxicating songs in Spanish, English and Portuguese sing out the bright colors and familial warmth of a South American kitchen.

The Original WailersLinks
The Original Wailers
Carrying the torch passed on by Bob Marley himself, original guitarist Al Anderson and original keyboardist and background singer Tyrone Downie have united along with a group of handpicked musicians to honor the history and integrity of Bob's music with The Original Wailers.
Al Anderson (guitar) first joined Bob Marley & The Wailers in 1973, going on to play with Bob until his untimely death in 1981. Al was an integral part of the Bob Marley & The Wailers sound, forever imprinting his guitar solos and production skills on the catalog that has sold more than 75 million records and touched so many around the world.
Tyrone Downie first joined Bob in the mid 70's as a keyboardist, background singer and producer. Tyrone's footprint on the music is unmistakable, and his attention to detail as a producer was also a big part of the Bob Marley & The Wailers sound and success. After Bob's death, Tyrone has stamped his passport in stints with Beenie Man, Black Uhuru, Buju Banton, Peter Tosh, Junior Reid, Tom Tom Club, Burning Spear and Steel Pulse to name a few.
Ruder Than YouLinks
Ruder Than You
RUDER THAN YOU was founded in 1989 by five students at Penn State University who relocated to Philadelphia in 1991. Long known as Philly's top ska band, Ruder Than You's identity has never fit too neatly into any of the generic ska categorizations. While ska and reggae stylings have always provided the common musical thread, over the past 20+ years they've been mixing in dancehall reggae, hip-hop, rocksteady, and rub-a-dub, even adding elements of funk, jazz, and punk - to create their own unique sound. The consistent factor however is the bands energy & and enthusiasm, which inevitably pulls people out onto the dance floor.

June 7, 2014 6:00-9:00 PM Philadelphia Folklore Project's 27th Birthday Bash
Join PFP for a special 27th year celebration on June 7, 2014:
* WELCOME SELINA MORALES as PFP's next Director
* Say FAREWELL to DEBORA KODISH after 27 years!
* HONOR Folk Arts and Social Change Awardees
* SING with the Liberian Women's Chorus for Change
* DANCE with Kulu Mele African Dance and Drum Ensemble
* Enjoy great food and drink!
Expect food, fun, engaging activities, a wonderful crowd of people, and an all-around joyful evening! This year marks big changes, includes great performances (with your participation) and it honors amazing women who are inspiring models in folk arts and change. This is your chance to:
* Bid farewell to PFP founder and longtime Director, Debora Kodish, and welcome incoming Director Selina Morales. The Birthday Bash marks a changing of the guard at PFP. Kodish is stepping down after 27 years at the helm.
Honor the 2014 Folk Arts and Social Change Awards recipients: Groundbreaking percussionists Nana Korantema Ayeboafo and Elaine Watts. Both artistic and social change innovators, Nana and Elaine are dynamic and inspiring women. Each was told that "women can't play drums" and discouraged from playing their chosen instrument. Lucky for us (and for so many others) each persevered. We honor Nana and Elaine for their courage, artistry and knowledge, for the ways in which they have made African and klezmer drumming (respectively) accessible to new generations, and for the inspiration they continue to provide as women and role models,
* Sing with the Liberian Women's Chorus for Change, and dance with Kulu Mele African Dance and Drum Ensemble. The Chorus is a new PFP Folk Arts and Social Change project: an ensemble that is using Liberian song traditions to address gender violence. They'll perform (and Bash attendees will get to sing along). And Kulu Mele will close the evening out with a participatory bantaba dance (including lessons!)
Where: The Painted Bride Art Center
230 Vine St.
Philadelphia Pa
Tickets start at $30.
