February 6, 2015 6:00-9:00 PM First Friday at The Barnes Foundation : CARNAVAL!

FIRST FRIDAY! CARNAVAL
Bem-vindos! We’re heating up February’s First Friday Carnaval-style, with samba dancers and capoeira performers. Feel the energy of Brazil through live performances merging dance, rhythm, and martial arts. Unwind with cocktails and after-hours access to the collection. Includes an eye-opening short talk on our African collection. In partnership with Brazilian Day Philadelphia.

6–7 pm Xande Cruz and PhillyBloco Performance
With a sound as rich and diverse as his native São Paulo, Xande Cruz adeptly blends urban and traditional rhythms in a soulful way like none other. PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, Carnaval bands with large percussion sections made up of 12 drummers. The performance explores the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms.

7–7:30 pm African collection talk

7:30–8:30 pm Philly Bloco and capoeira performance
Capoeira was born out of the struggle for freedom. African slaves brought it to Brazil in the 16th century and cleverly disguised this powerful form of self-defense as a harmless dance. To hide their fighting spirit from their masters, the earliest capoeiristas combined playful, graceful dance and acrobatic movements with deadly kicks. While training, they avoided injuries by keeping direct physical contact to a minimum. Songs, percussion instruments, and clapping completed the ritual. For the master, capoeira was merely entertainment; for the slave, it was a fight for liberation.

Cocktails and light fare available for purchase.
Featured dish: Feijoada. Afro-Brazilian stew of black eye peas, beef, okra and kale served over orange scented rice.
