Vertical Current, also known as VC, was started in 2009 by trumpeter/composer Christopher Stevens, Donald C. Stevens Jr. (Bass) and Brandon Mullen (Drums). They were later joined by Ali Prawl (Keys) and Jordan Damiani (Guitar). Since forming in 2009, the band has worked with artists such as Jessica Reedy, Leah Smith, Jeff Murrell, Noel Gourdine, and Dezzie Neal. Some of the band’s highlights include performing at the Lancaster Ave Jazz Fest, the Center City Jazz Fest, the Collingswood Mayfair, and opening for The Robert Glasper Experiment at World Cafe Live. In 2010, Vertical Current collaborated with local hit-maker Donald Robinson to make their debut EP “aRe”. This year the band worked with young super producer, Steve Mckie, to record their first full length cd which will be entitled “Bright Side of Midnight”. Over the course of the last year or so the band has grown to include vocalists Chartel Findlater and Shelia Moser. VC has also been known to have a surprise guest on occasion. For instance the band was joined by Eric Roberson at a recent show. Individually, members of this band have recorded and performed with a wide variety of artists from Earth Wind & Fire to Darryl Hall so you never know who might show up. VC’s brand of music is a unique blend of genres that is intended to uplift and inspire.

If you are feeling adventurous make sure to explore PMG and partake in all of the activities with other culturally driven attendees.
Visitors also have the chance to learn more about PMG through fun, casual mini-tours of the space and can view the temporary exhibition hanging in our galleries. All Twilight in the Gardens evenings are BYOBBS (Bring Your Own Booze, Blanket, and Snacks)!

August 23, 2017 5:00-8:00PM Summer Nights at Penn Museum: Trinidelphia
This summer, discover an outdoor concert experience that in-the-know Philadelphians have been enjoying for years. The Penn Museum’s eighth annual Summer Nights Concert Series brings an eclectic lineup of performances—including Creole Zydeco, Calypso, ‘20s Jazz, Middle Eastern folk, and more—to the relaxing garden setting of the Museum’s Stoner Courtyard. Admission is just $10 (free for PennCard holders, Penn Medicine and CHOP employees with ID; Penn Museum Members, and children under 6 years old). Concerts are presented every Wednesday evening, June 21 through September 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
The series is geared to visitors of any age, from friends meeting after work to families with children. Museum general admission is included with concert admission, and galleries stay open to 8:00 pm. At the 6:30 pm set break, attendees may take a short guided gallery tour. Outside, kids can color and play at a craft station.
The Pepper Mill Café offers a garden bar with wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, and light foods for sale. Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnics, blankets, chairs, and even dogs (but no alcohol, please). Concerts move indoors during inclement weather.
Photo: Penn Museum
Fusing Trinidadian Soca and Calypso with Latin jazz, reggae, salsa, and American top 40, Trinadelphia has developed a sound all their own. Their unique and rhythmic arrangements of jazz and popular songs cast the steelpan in fresh new light, pushing the stylistic and artistic boundaries of an often-typecast instrument.

August 18, 2017 8:00 PM DUMPSTAPHUNK THE LONDON SOULS, CON BRIO at Ardmore Music Hall
Dumpstaphunk stands out among New Orleans’ best as one of the funkiest bands to ever arise from the Crescent City. Born on the Jazz & Heritage Festival stage, and descended from Neville family bloodlines, these soldiers of funk ignite a deep, gritty groove that dares listeners not to move. Their performances combine ingenious musicianship and complex funk and jazz arrangements with soulful melodies that are simple enough for anyone to enjoy. In Big Easy tradition, dueling baselines from Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III set off one of the dirtiest rhythm sections on the planet, while Ivan Neville lights up the Hammond B3 keys and cousin Ian Neville’s funky guitar riffs send the groove into overdrive. The band recently welcomed their newest member, Alvin Ford Jr. to the quintet, a New Orleans born and raised powerhouse drummer. Dumpstaphunk tosses around lead vocals and four-part harmonies the way Sly & the Family Stone did, but with three studio albums under their belt, Dumpstaphunk stands on the merit of their own material. Songs like “Dancin’ To The Truth” off their latest record, Dirty Word (Red Hot Records), offer an escape into the funky sublime, sharing the true spirit of New Orleans with every note.
