June 6, 2018 8:00-10:00PM Fire Museum presents: Nakatani Gong Orchestra at The Rotunda

Nakatani Gong Orchestra

A contemporary live art sound project, N.G.O. has toured all over North and Central America. This is an ongoing, growing community engagement project and the only bowed-Gong orchestra in existence in the world today. The rich harmonies produced from multiple layers of bowed gongs are simply magic to anyone, engaging and inspiring the spirits of both the player and all who attend.

For each performance in a given city, gong players are selected by a local curator. Most are new to N.G.O. Nakatani gives a specialized training workshop to selected players in preparation for the performance. Players will also experience Nakatani’s own unique point of view regarding Gong techniques, and will experience undiscovered dimensions while immersed in the vibrations and sounds during a training workshop. Nakatani is the composer and conductor for the performance.

Nakatani began germinating ideas for N.G.O. in early 2002, and finally took the project to on the road in April 2011. He had performed 87 concerts with N.G.O. all over the USA and Mexico by December 2015. Notable venues include John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., MOCA Cleveland, OH, Tigertail productions presented at Miami Dade County Auditorium in FL, Bemis Contemporary Art Center in Omaha NE, Columbia Museum of Art in SC,The RotundaTh and The Issue Project Room in New York City.

Many listener have said “I have never experienced anything like this before!”, along with describing a feeling of cleansing a sort of purification after the event. Today, sound based therapy practices use singing bowls and gongs, which result in similar euphonious waves and energies. The primary purpose of N.G.O. is not for spiritual ceremonial purposes or “gong bathing”, but the fact is that with over 14 various gong sizes, ranging in diameters from 10 to 50 inches, one can’t avoid some of these amazing secondary results.

June 4, 2018 8:00PM LaNOCHE Cubana at The Kimmel Center

Heat up the Kimmel Center each month at La NOCHE! Experience the hottest live bands as you turn up the steam on the dance floor, led by host/dance leader Kevin Ngo.

Each month, we kick off the party with The La NOCHE Band, led by master percussionist Arturo Stable. We then welcome a different guest group to light up the floor.

Join us this special month for a celebration of Cuban music featuring The La NOCHE Band, led by Cuban percussionist Arturo Stable, as well as 2 very special guest Cuban singers and musicians, Ariacne Trujillo Durand and Yusa Lopez Bridon!

Ariacne Trujillo Durand

Grammy Nominee Ariacne Trujillo was born in Havana, Cuba where she began her career as a child prodigy concert pianist. Blessed with perfect pitch, she was graduated from Cuba’s competitive ISA conservatory while working as a singer and dancer at the legendary Cabaret Tropicana. Since arriving in New York City in 2002, Ariacne has performed and/or recorded with Paul Simon, Paquito D’ Rivera, Wynton Marsalis, Danny Rivera, Jonny Pacheco, John Scofield, Brian Lynch, Esperanza Spalding and Savion Glover.

Yusa Lopez Bridon

Yusa (Yusimil Lopez Bridon) was born in the Buena Vista district and grew up in the modern Alamar housing community of east Havana. Yusa started playing guitar at the age of six and went on to Cuban tres guitar and also taking piano and bass. Her work has been influenced by years spent jamming in the hallways and classrooms of the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory exchanging musical ideas with contemporaries such as Roberto Carcasses, who has arranged many of her songs. Yusa was also part of the improvising female quintet Quasi-Jazz at that crucible of Cuban music, El Zorro y el Cuervo, the basement night club on Havana´s central La Rampa street which has been at the cutting edge of Cuban jazz since the early 20th century. Now Yusa is admired and known as a highly talented arranger, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist playing guitar, tres, bass and piano/keyboards in various son, jazz, rock and acoustic duo combinations.

MINAS // Brazilian Jazz

featuring Orlando Haddad (guitar, vocal), Patricia King Haddad (piano, vocal) and  Skip Spratt (flute, sax) [$7]

Minas takes Brazilian and American roots to create a sound that is fresh and innovative, from ballads tinged with melancholic traits of Blues and Choro, to Folk coasting on the subtle coolness of a Bossa Nova pulse, to upbeat Sambas elaborated with instrumental jazz improvisation, scat singing and whimsical whistling. With recordings of original music and a collection of over 100 songs, Orlando and Patricia’s compositions have been compared to classics by Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Capturing the essence of great songwriting with memorable melodies, inventive harmonies, and poetic lyrics, the music of Minas is engaging and timeless.  Past performances include: Lincoln Center in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Mellon Jazz Fest, Mann Music Center in Philly, Zanzibar Blue in Philly, World Café Live and numerous of other dates all over the United States, Europe and South America.

June 2, 2018 11:00AM-4:00PM Jamaica Celebration at Penn Museum

EXPLORE JAMAICA AT A PENN MUSEUM CELEBRATION
SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

As the weather gets warmer and sunny days grow longer, the Penn Museum offers a Celebration of Jamaica on Saturday, June 2, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, in partnership with the region’s Young Caribbean Professional Network, Team Jamaica Bickle – Philadelphia, and Jamaica Land We Love (Jalawelo). The family-friendly day features reggae and steel pan music from the Caribbean Islands, dance, storytelling, distinctive crafts, a curator gallery talk, and more, all free with Museum admission.
Island music is the highlight of the day, with a performance and a workshop held outside in the Museum’s Stoner Courtyard and garden, weather permitting. At 1:30 pm, Patrick Davis, a musician who hails from Trinidad, introduces guests to the “many voices of the steel drum” at a Steel Pan workshop. He demonstrates on his own drum, made from a 55-gallon oil drum container, and invites guests to try it for themselves.

At 3:30 pm, ten members of the Philadelphia Pan Stars Steel Orchestra provide a rousing performance, offering up the sounds of reggae, soca, calypso and jazz. Founded more than two decades ago, the group is Philadelphia’s first steel orchestra, with 75 members from the Caribbean Islands, Japan, and throughout the United States. The orchestra has performed at numerous regional Caribbean and African-American festivals and parades. The musicians perform on steel drums, congo drums, scratchers, base drums, tenor drums, and guitar drums—all drums which mimic other instruments.

Any Celebration of Jamaica requires Jamaican food—and authentic, tasty options are offered for purchase via food trucks in the Courtyard, while the Museum’s Pepper Mill Café offers other options inside.

June 1, 2018 7:00-10:00PM The Monthly Fund: June Edition

This June installment of The Monthly Fund is supporting The Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project. The event will feature performances by some incredible artists including:

GADADU
Oh! Pears
Maryan Nagy Captan
Murayama Music

About The Monthly Fund:
The Monthly Fund is a roaming, salon-style event series curated by Jeremy Prouty. Each month, a collaborative event is held somewhere in Philadelphia to raise funds and awareness for an organization doing good/necessary work. Past organizations include the Standing Rock Legal Collective, New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, and Bread & Roses Community Fund.

About The Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project:
YASP conducts art, poetry, music, and empowerment workshops at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center (P.I.C.C.) and Riverside Correctional Facility (R.F.C.) every Saturday with young people under 18 who are being tried as adults. We also show our documentary and do leadership building workshops at schools and colleges to teach youth about the flaws of the criminal justice system and how to avoid a life of crime.

We believe that it is very important to talk to youth both in the adult jails and in public schools to help them stay out of the system period.

We believe that the more youth that we inform about the school-to-prison pipeline, the more progress we make because knowledge is power.

We believe that the reason that youth in urban communities end up going through the school-to-prison pipeline and end up incarcerated is because most of them didn’t realize that it was even in place.

Help YASP help our communities for the better. We all have a voice, let’s use them to better the future.

May 13, 2018 12:00PM Mothers' Day Brunch with Minas Trio at World Cafe Live

Going on its 10th consecutive year, Mother’s Day Brunch with Minas is a classic event here at World Cafe. Treat your favorite Mom to a delicious brunch while being serenaded by delightful Bossa Nova sounds performed live by Orlando & Patricia and featuring special guest Andrew Neu. This event sells out, so make your reservation early.

Featuring core-members Orlando Haddad and Patricia King, internationally acclaimed Minas is one of the longest established Brazilian Jazz musical groups in the US today. Indicated for 3 Grammy awards in 2010 for the CD Bossa Nova Day and 4 awards for their acclaimed Symphony in Bossa (both released here at WCL), Minas has performed in major national venues such as Lincoln Center in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and the Kimmel and Mann Centers in Philadelphia.

Orlando and Patricia have enchanted audiences with their magical and unique sound, artistry and warmth, where the poetry of their lives is heard in every note. Minas reflects a perfect musical marriage with a stage presence and chemistry that only a lifetime can produce.

Andrew Neu is one of the most exciting, multi-genre musicians today. He is well respected throughout the industry for his work as a saxophonist, woodwind player, arranger, composer, educator and recording artist. Regularly touring the world with Bobby Caldwell, Diane Schuur and Smokey Robinson, Neu has shared the stage with Elton John, Patti Labelle, Mellissa Manchester, Mel Torme, Joey DeFrancesco, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Philly Pops, The Four Tops, and The Temptations among others. He has recorded with Sister Sledge, Manhattan Transfer, David Sanborn, Gerald Veasley, Jeff Lorber, Brian Bromberg, Rick Braun, Brian Culbertson, Chuck Loeb, Paul Brown and Buddy DeFranco.

Orlando, Patricia and Andrew will be performing classic bossas - their Getz/Gilberto renditions are as good as it Getz, LOL- originals from Minas' 6-CD collection, and selections from their sold-out November show "Beatles in Bossa Nova".

May 12, 2018 7:00-9:30PM Underground at Ron's #72: Dan Mulqueen and Jerry Decker

Dan Mulqueen is an American multi-instrumentalist from New Jersey. His approach to the handpan has led to a very distinct and recognizable sound which weighs heavily on the side of beat-driven and head-bouncing rhythms. His style comes from over 16 years of drum set playing in genres such as rock, hip-hop, reggae, trip hop, metal, jazz and many more. You can hear some phrasing and rhythmic influences from these genres in the music he creates on the handpans. Dan's songs cross a wide variety of genres and moods all while holding on to some distinct player characteristics. So matter what music you're into, there's probably something for you in his catalog!
Jerry Decker originally from Bloomsburg and now from Phoenixville, has been playing drums for over 27 years. Over the past 2 years, he discovered the newest world percussion instrument, the handpan. He plays it with great sensitivity, passion and joy!

The Armour Sisters
The Armour Sisters embody complementary musical flavors, and have enjoyed singing and playing together in various configurations over the years. Michelle and Angela love the feeling of their “blood harmonies”, and are ever-grateful for the music running through their veins. Their Pop-Pop was a jazz-pianist in the style of Art Tatum. Their father melded his early classical and jazz background with blues, Indian music, and rock and roll to create progressive rock before it was a thing. Their mother is an artist who has always given them inspiration and introduced them to oldies and Japanese music. Michelle and Angela infuse these influences with soul to craft songs, poetry, and heart-based grooves to share their life experiences, insights, and perspectives.

May 11, 2018 8:00PM Yosvany Terry Afro-Cuban Sextet at The Painted Bride

Cuban-born saxophonist and composer Yosvany Terry, along with his powerhouse Afro-Cuban Sextet, blends musical influences from West Africa, Cuba, and American jazz. Their singular sound, now recognized as one of the most ambitious cross-cultural visions on the contemporary scene, is marked by Afro-Cuban poly-rhythms and exquisite post-bop angles. New York Times declares that Terry’s music has “helped redefine Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz as a complex new idiom.”

For Terry, “musicians are cultural ambassadors by default—constantly working with people from different cultures, and traveling to different places. With Today’s Opinion I had a chance to incorporate these cultural influences, while offering my own ‘op-ed’ piece on where I think music is and any analysis of where I see jazz headed.”

Terry is joined by a stellar cast of longtime collaborators. The group is built upon the commanding bass work of Yunior Terry, Yosvany’s younger brother. Haitian-American drummer Obed Calvaire, a rising force on the jazz scene, provides dazzling rhythmic currents, while Cuban pianist Osmany Paredes is a formidable bandleader and composer in his own right. Trumpeter Michael Rodriguez is a leading voice on the New York scene best known for his work with Charlie Haden (and his brother, pianist Robert Rodriguez) and Cuban percussion virtuoso Mauricio Herrera, like Terry a cultural bearer of various Afro-Cuban traditions, completes the ensemble.
