Going on its 10th consecutive year, Mother’s Day Brunch with Minas is a classic event here at World Cafe. Treat your favorite Mom to a delicious brunch while being serenaded by delightful Bossa Nova sounds performed live by Orlando & Patricia and featuring special guest Andrew Neu. This event sells out, so make your reservation early.
Minas takes Brazilian and American roots to create a sound that is fresh and innovative, from ballads tinged with melancholic traits of Blues and Choro, to Folk coasting on the subtle coolness of a Bossa Nova pulse, to upbeat Sambas elaborated with instrumental jazz improvisation, scat singing and whimsical whistling. With recordings of original music and a collection of over 100 songs, Orlando and Patricia’s compositions have been compared to classics by Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Capturing the essence of great songwriting with memorable melodies, inventive harmonies, and poetic lyrics, the music of Minas is engaging and timeless.
Featuring core-members Orlando Haddad and Patricia King, internationally acclaimed Minas is one of the longest established Brazilian Jazz musical groups in the US today. Indicated for 3 Grammy awards in 2010 for the CD Bossa Nova Day and 4 awards for their acclaimed Symphony in Bossa (both released here at WCL), Minas has performed in major national venues such as Lincoln Center in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and the Kimmel and Mann Centers in Philadelphia.
Orlando and Patricia have enchanted audiences with their magical and unique sound, artistry and warmth, where the poetry of their lives is heard in every note. Minas reflects a perfect musical marriage with a stage presence and chemistry that only a lifetime can produce.
Andrew Neu is one of the most exciting, multi-genre musicians today. He is well respected throughout the industry for his work as a saxophonist, woodwind player, arranger, composer, educator and recording artist. Regularly touring the world with Bobby Caldwell, Diane Schuur and Smokey Robinson, Neu has shared the stage with Elton John, Patti Labelle, Mellissa Manchester, Mel Torme, Joey DeFrancesco, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Philly Pops, The Four Tops, and The Temptations among others. He has recorded with Sister Sledge, Manhattan Transfer, David Sanborn, Gerald Veasley, Jeff Lorber, Brian Bromberg, Rick Braun, Brian Culbertson, Chuck Loeb, Paul Brown and Buddy DeFranco.
Orlando, Patricia and Andrew will be performing classic bossas - their Getz/Gilberto renditions are as good as it Getz, LOL- originals from Minas' 6-CD collection, and selections from their sold-out November show "Beatles in Bossa Nova".
