A fearless and versatile talent, contemporary harpist Brandee Youngerdefies genres and labels as a classically-trained musician playing in the avant-garde tradition of her sonically forward forebears Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. Ms. Younger delivers a consistently fresh take on the ancient instrument as an educator, curator, performer and leader of the Brandee Younger Quartet. Ms. Younger has produced an impressive body of work since the 2011 debut of her seminal Prelude EP, including Brandee Younger Live @ The Breeding Ground, a breakthrough performance on Bluenote Records and Revive Music’s 2015 Supreme Sonacy Vol. 1 LP, and the more recent release of her critically-acclaimed 2016 Wax & Wane LP. Sittin’ In introduces audiences to new cutting-edge artists. It defies genre, often drawing from everything from straight-ahead jazz to freestyle hip hop and all points in between. There’s an unpredictability to the night, which we enthusiastically embrace! Sometimes you’ll experience a finely tuned set and sometimes you can catch a totally improvised show by seven people who have never played together. The awesome creativity, excitement, and quality always shine through in The Kimmel Center’s informal club-like setting, featuring early warm-up sets by some of the hottest DJs around. 8:15PM: First set Kirby Sybert With an innate ability to tap into a creative mindset, Kirby Sybert's boundless talent and infectious enthusiasm is readily apparent in any medium, whether it be fashion, film, fine art, or photography. However, it is in performing music that Kirby finds his greatest rewards. His musical adventures have led him around the world, sometimes leading his band Kirby & the VibeTribe, sometimes solo, sometimes backing up friends like Ali Awan, Mo Lowda and the Humble, and the Dawn Drapes, playing whatever instrument is at hand or just harmonizing with strangers in an effort to spread his message of positivity. This is reflected in his songs, which are built on hip-shaking grooves, while his lyrics portray a vast set of characters, united in their struggle to be better people in a better world. Because of his intense focus on forging a relationship with his audience, every one of Kirby's performances is a unique experience. It is simply in his nature; if there is a piano in a room, it will be played, and if there is a person in the room, they will be befriended. The only way to truly understand is to experience it for yourself! 9:15PM: Second set Arturo Stable Trio + Surprise Guest 1440 W. Ritner St. (SE corner of 15th and W. Ritner Sts) BYOB/Potluck $5 suggested donation at the door |
