March 30, 2019 8:00PM Noura Mint Seymali at The Kimmel Center
Noura Mint Seymali’s dreamlike vocals combined with her husband, Jeich Ould Chighaly’s, psych guitar, which has been compared to Hendrix and Richard Thompson, guarantees an evening of dynamic world music. She and her husband are Moorish griots – the poets, storytellers and musicians who maintain a tradition of oral history in parts of West Africa. Combining roots Moorish music with a contemporary style, they have gained critical attention with chart topping albums and electrifying performances.
Praised by NPR and the Guardian, Noura Mint Seymali is the Islamic Republic of Mauritania's defining artist on the international stage. Born into a prominent line of Moorish griots and musicians, Seymali began her career at age 13 as a supporting vocalist with her step-mother, the legendary Dimi Mint Abba. As described by NPR, “the arrival of Mauritanian vocalist Noura Mint Seymali in front of Western audiences feels like the start of a new era.”

March 20, 2019 9:00-11:00PM Sittin' In featuring Brandee Younger at The Kimmel Center
A fearless and versatile talent, contemporary harpist Brandee Youngerdefies genres and labels as a classically-trained musician playing in the avant-garde tradition of her sonically forward forebears Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. Ms. Younger delivers a consistently fresh take on the ancient instrument as an educator, curator, performer and leader of the Brandee Younger Quartet. Ms. Younger has produced an impressive body of work since the 2011 debut of her seminal Prelude EP, including Brandee Younger Live @ The Breeding Ground, a breakthrough performance on Bluenote Records and Revive Music’s 2015 Supreme Sonacy Vol. 1 LP, and the more recent release of her critically-acclaimed 2016 Wax & Wane LP. Sittin’ In introduces audiences to new cutting-edge artists. It defies genre, often drawing from everything from straight-ahead jazz to freestyle hip hop and all points in between. There’s an unpredictability to the night, which we enthusiastically embrace! Sometimes you’ll experience a finely tuned set and sometimes you can catch a totally improvised show by seven people who have never played together. The awesome creativity, excitement, and quality always shine through in The Kimmel Center’s informal club-like setting, featuring early warm-up sets by some of the hottest DJs around. March 19, 2019 8:00-10:15PM Not So Latin Concerts: Kirby Sybert and Arturo Stable Trio + Special Guest
8:15PM: First set Kirby Sybert With an innate ability to tap into a creative mindset, Kirby Sybert's boundless talent and infectious enthusiasm is readily apparent in any medium, whether it be fashion, film, fine art, or photography. However, it is in performing music that Kirby finds his greatest rewards. His musical adventures have led him around the world, sometimes leading his band Kirby & the VibeTribe, sometimes solo, sometimes backing up friends like Ali Awan, Mo Lowda and the Humble, and the Dawn Drapes, playing whatever instrument is at hand or just harmonizing with strangers in an effort to spread his message of positivity. This is reflected in his songs, which are built on hip-shaking grooves, while his lyrics portray a vast set of characters, united in their struggle to be better people in a better world. Because of his intense focus on forging a relationship with his audience, every one of Kirby's performances is a unique experience. It is simply in his nature; if there is a piano in a room, it will be played, and if there is a person in the room, they will be befriended. The only way to truly understand is to experience it for yourself! 9:15PM: Second set Arturo Stable Trio + Surprise Guest 1440 W. Ritner St. (SE corner of 15th and W. Scott Kettner with special guest Rob Curto
When Scott Kettner looks at a map, he sees a direct line that connects the rivers of northeastern Brazil to the parishes of New Orleans and the streets of NYC. A master percussionist, bandleader and educator, Kettner is the guiding force behind Nation Beat, a band whose teeming, vibrant rhythms find common ground in the primal maracatu rhythm of Brazil’s northeast, the Big Easy’s funky, hypnotic second-line and the unfettered freedom of big-city downtown jazz. He is the creator of WorldDrumLessons.Com, an online academy for percussionists and is a part-time faculty member at The New School University. His instructional book, Maracatu for Drumset and Percussion is published by Hal Leonard.
