August 18, 2020 6:00PM Sharon Katz and The Peace Train Concert Live on Facebook

Band Performing Together to Say Goodbye
before we leave Philly for the West Coast

Live on Facebook
Tues, 8/18 at 6:00pm Eastern Time
We'll be together in a private space so you can watch from your own home by going to:

On 8/26, Sharon and Marilyn are heading back to the West Coast to continue their Transcending Barriers project with youth in the Tijuana-San Diego region with funding from the San Diego Foundation and in partnership with Promotora de las Bellas Artes.

We're so grateful to have the support of the US Consulate in Tijuana, the South African Consulate in Los Angeles, and the Mexican Embassy in South Africa as we continue this important work.

Just like the rhythms and voices from Cuba, South Africa, Mexico and USA that swirl, meet, are influenced, and change from the musical encounters on this album, so do our human relationships.

Featured Track this week is #5, the title track: We Can Be The Change featuring special guests Coro Orfeon from Cuba

Music and lyrics by by Sharon Katz, Malcolm Nhleko and Nonhlanhla Wanda.

This recording blends the rallying cry from our anti-Apartheid work in South Africa, our current Transcending Barriers project on the border between Mexico and the USA, and our 2019 tour in Cuba. It features the choral group Coro Orfeon, conducted by our dear friend and colleague Daria Abreu Feraud. Sharon wrote the original track for The Peace Train’s 2016 tour, “Putting the United Back in the USA.” It was the vision then, as it still is now, to communicate to the younger generation that we absolutely must commit ourselves to social justice. If we do not believe that things can change and act with conviction and commitment, then nothing will ever change. Sharon Katz & The Peace Train have been dedicated to the ending of violence and racism in society since we formed in 1992 in South Africa. A luta continua! (The struggle continues!)

experience the soundtrack to the art of survival
The Escape Artist Initiative and the African American Museum in Philadelphia are teaming up to bring you the next issue of the Escape Artist Mixtape Zine Vol. 5: Parable of Coronas. This latest zine issue is inspired by Parable of the Sower, the prophetic novel by the late great Octavia E. Butler and current existential issues and resonant signs of the times.
Escape Artist Mixtape zines explore the art of survival through myth, media and music, D.I.Y and pop culture, afrofuturism and speculative fiction. Zine content is thematic and interactive including creative problem-solving activities, disaster prep protocol and practical survival tips from field experts and fellow escape artists.
This edition of the Escape Artist Initiative zine will include micro-interviews and an interactive playlist with contributions from local and national escape artists and radical visionaries of change. The upcoming issue and the collaborative program with AAMP features Greg Tate(musician/cultural critic), M. Asli Dukan (filmmaker/multidisciplinary artist), Femi Olatunji (visual artist/DJ) and LaTreice Branson (musician/radical wellness practitioner). August 7, 2020 7:00-8:30PM Songs of Hope and Freedom with V. Shayne Frederick & Trio

Songs of Freedom and Hope // Live from The Paul Robeson House & Museum // V. Shayne Frederick and His Trio // Aug 7 @ 7pm ET on Facebook

About this Event

We continue to be blessed by our village.

V. Shayne Frederick, who was scheduled for our Arts in the Parlor series before COVID, has been working with us to offer an exclusive live streaming experience. Embracing protocols for community safety, we are proud to be able to offer this concert for viewing in your homes and on your phones through our Facebook at Paul Robeson House Events.
In planning conversations, we were taken aback by V. Shayne’s offering of “What do you need? How can we support?” One of the projects that requires immediate attention but not accounted for in our successful shared fundraiser with the Colored Girls Museum is the restoration of The Paul Robeson House & Museum’s 3rd floor facade. (Pictured below) What may look like just requiring a new paint job, we have been told also requires attention to the rotting wood.

Proceeds from this concert will support that restoration project, and we’ve set a goal of $5,000 in the lead up and in celebration of this unique, one-of-a-kind experience. We ask that you donate what's right for you. Suggestions of increments of $10, $20, $50, and $100.
