On August 29th at 3:30 PM, a free livestream discussion, “Kulu Mele talks 50 years of Black dance, music and culture” digs into Kulu Mele’s history and these new resources on Philadelphia culture and history. Explore the relevance of excellent Black pasts, presents and futures with Kulu Mele’s Dorothy and John Wilkie in a conversation hosted by Chris Rogers (Paul Robeson House), and John Morrison (free-lance journalist). Register here.

About the participants: Dorothy Wilkie, Artistic Director of Kulu Mele African Dance and Drum Ensemble, and John Wilkie, Music Director, joined Kulu Mele in 1971. John Wilkie has been playing percussion since he was young, learning from vanguard Philadelphia musicians. Dorothy has been dancing her whole life, beginning with the social dances of the day, and then following a path into African dance, always seeking and learning. From their early days drawing crowds on the dance floor to recent triumphs of Kulu Mele performance, the two are partners in art and life, visionary and humble leadership anchoring Kulu Mele’s long-lasting presence."We were revolutionaries through drums,”says Baba John Wilkie.

Christopher Rogers, Program Director at the Paul Robeson House, was born and raised in Chester, PA and is now a Ph.D Candidate within the Reading/Writing/Literacy program at PennGSE.

John Morrison is a Philadelphia-based DJ, producer, and music journalist. In addition to creating music, he has written for Red Bull Music Academy, Jazz Right Now, Bandcamp Daily and more.
