Renowned percussionist Hafez Kotain opens a night of films that moves poetically through different facets — and moments — of diasporic Arab experience. From Randa Ali's poetic mediation Kingdom of Strangers to Hana Alghanim's slice-of-life documentary Amo: Uncle and her more recent short Labor Day, the night’s program is sure to offer beauty, laughs, and thrills.
Program Details:
Opening Performer: Hafez Kotain
Kingdom of Strangers (Randa Ali, 15 minutes): Torn between new experiences and old memories, a young Egyptian man works through his present experience of L.A. — as well as his haunting past.
Amo: Uncle (Haya Alghanim, 4 minutes): A brief documentary capturing the banter among Atlantic Avenue shopkeepers — dense, rich, and good-humored
Labor Day (Haya Alghanim, 11 minutes): An invitation to a Hudson Valley vacation exposes rivalries among a group of young women — and plenty of unexpected turns.
Magda (Karim Kassem, 13 minutes): A photographer’s surreal journey around New York City brings him into contact with new subjects, people, and revelations — shot in beautiful 16mm.
