September 1, 2023 6:00-9:00PM First Friday at The Barnes Foundation: Ruth Naomi Floyd

Enjoy an evening of art, live music, cocktails, and light fare at our monthly First Friday mixer. This month, we’re presenting a special evening of music featuring jazz vocalist and composer Ruth Naomi Floyd.

A committed music educator, Floyd has been at the forefront of vocal jazz, creating a discography that rests at the intersection of theology, history, and justice. She is the first African American woman to serve as founding director of a university jazz studies program in the US and was recently appointed as the Community College of Philadelphia’s inaugural artist-in-residence. For over 25 years, Floyd has been a devoted advocate for causes including incarceration, homelessness, and HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia and Africa. In 2019, Concordia College New York awarded her an honorary doctorate for her unique and valuable contribution to the arts, commitment to music education, and justice work.

For tonight’s program, Floyd leads her multifaceted jazz ensemble in a musical response to William Edmondson: A Monumental Vision.

Live music sets: 6:30 & 7:45 pm
