Join us for FREE on 10/1, 10 am - 5 pm for PECO Free First Sunday Family Day: Community Storytellers
On the first Sunday of the month, we've got free admission at the Barnes!
On Sunday, 10/1, our partnership with Musicopia brings us performances by Philly son jarocho group Son Revoltura. Move and groove to the traditional rhythms of Veracruz, Mexico. Explore the sones (sounds) of son jarocho and its Mexican, Spanish, African, and Indigenous roots in special performances. Plus, see the Barnes collection for free and enjoy fun family activities that celebrate the stories of our communities.
Registration opens Thursday, September 28, at 10am.
Activities include:
10 am – 4 pm | Art Activities | ages 2+
Join us for art activities, a scavenger hunt, and play that celebrates music and sounds. Perfect for the whole family!
10:30 – 11 am + 11:15 – 11:45 am | Storytime | ages 2+
Poet and storyteller Leslie D. Hamilton brings stories and fun for ages 2 and up. Learn about percussion sounds, beats, and the ways we tell our stories through music.
12:30 – 1:15 pm + 2:30 – 3:15 pm | Son Revoltura Performance
Son Revoltura is a Philly-based music collective that fosters the Afroindigenous Mexican tradition of son jarocho with weekly workshops, large celebrations called fandangos, and public performances. Hear traditional songs like “La Bamba,” “La Guacamaya,” “El Colás,” and “El Torito Jarocho.” Get ready to move! The group will teach special dances that go with many of the songs.
