This month, we’re highlighting the work of artist Mickalene Thomas, whose vivid, spectacularly staged artworks offer an empowered vision of Black femininity and beauty. Inspired by our new exhibition, the Philadelphia Jazz Tap Ensemble will present two exhilarating dance performances honoring great women in jazz.
The Philadelphia Jazz Tap Ensemble presents progressive jazz music and tap dance featuring compositions by great women in jazz, including Geri Allen, Beryl Booker, Mary Lou Williams, Shirley Scott and more! Our music is inspired by Mickalene Thomas and her representations of feminine power through portraiture. Featuring Tim Brey on piano, Stephan Burse on vocals, Anwar Marshall on drums, Khalil Munir and Robin Passmore on tap shoes, and Madison Rast on bass. The Philadelphia Jazz Tap Ensemble is directed by Pamela Hetherington. Performances: 1 – 1:45pm & 2:30 – 3:15pm
