GOVT CHEAZE
Some sounds never leave you. Govt Cheaze built their name on that truth.
Formed in Philadelphia in 2000, Govt Cheaze carved out their own lane with a hybrid of hip-hop, rock, and soul that hit different every time the lights went down. Bandleader and co-founder Kameelah Waheed built something rare - a collective with real edge and real heart. Hypeman and vocalist X Vertigo brought the fire from the front, while a deep roster of talent including Michael Brown, Vince Butler, Randy Waters, Mandy Heck, James Laureman, Antwan Carr, Keenan, Big Mike, and Joe Jordan gave the band a sound that grew, shifted, and stayed undeniable across fifteen years.
Their journey took them to stages that mattered. Govt Cheaze performed at the first annual Roots Picnic, held it down at the Atlanta and Dewey Beach Conferences, and earned a home on the Philly Through My Ear label, the imprint owned by Will Smith Sr. These weren't just gigs - they were moments that defined a generation of Philly music.
They retired in 2015. And the city never quite filled that space.
Eleven years later, Govt Cheaze comes home.
