June 17, 2022 8:00PM Arthur Thomas and the Funkitorium cover James Brown; with Zeek Burse and Carla Gamble

Philly Undercover

It’s not a cover band, it’s not a tribute band… it’s Philly Undercover! We’ve asked some of our favorite artists to pay homage to their favorite artists for this series. You may not recognize these local acts as they take the stage playing full sets in their best musical disguise for one night only.

Arthur Thomas & the Funkitorium take on the Godfather of Soul James Brown, featuring special guests Zeek Burse, Carla Gamble, and more TBA.

Arthur Thomas & The Funkitorium
Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube

“The Funkitorium” was birthed in Philadelphia, PA in March 2019. After a few months of filtering, the band finally found a crew that fits. Those Artists are Lead Vocalist "Arthur Thomas", Vocalist "Re-Mus", Guitarist "Zavetis", Bassist "The Jusman", Drummer "Chops", DJ "Ndot", Dan "The Man" on keys, and last but not least, Cam on Percussion/Drums. The Funkitorium was assembled like one of the superteams that you see in sports by front man Arthur Thomas. The band became a group with a chemistry that you don’t see that often - the brotherhood between them all plays a huge part in their success. Individually all 8 of these music artists are incredibly dope, but together Arthur Thomas and The Funkitorium are a force to be reckoned with. The music and their live performances show that funk music is a genre that is enjoyable to people of all ages and races."

June 15, 2022 8:00-10:30PM Yasser Tejada & Palotré at the Kimmel Cultural Campus

Nightlife meets….something new! It’s a free concert and a party – all powered by the brightest talent the region has to offer.

Featuring Yasser Tejeda & Palotré

A Partnered Presentation with MALPICA & AFROTAINO

The fusion group Yasser Tejeda & Palotré is making a name for themselves by blending Dominican roots sounds like salve, palo and sarandunga with jazz and rock. They recently released the album Kijombo which pays homage to these folkloric sounds.

In the Dominican Republic, there is a rich and diverse array of folkloric and roots music that spreads across different parts of the country. These rhythms reign in rural areas, and are often tied to cultural or spiritual practices. And while globally, the genres that have come to define the country are merengue and bachata, Afro-Dominican roots music is part of the nation’s soul.

Yasser Tejeda & Palotré are hoping to bring visibility to these local sounds and reimagine what it means to be Dominican, through electrifying fusions and heartfelt lyrics. One of the songs in the album titled “Amor Arrayano,” featuring Grammy-winning artist Vicente García, takes on the Dominican-Haitian border through a love story.

ODUNDE was created in 1975 by Lois Fernandez. The festival attracts UP TO 500,000 people annually and is the largest African American street  festival held in the country. The ODUNDE festival, whose concept originates from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa, celebrates the coming of another year for  African Americans and Africanized people around the world. It is an occasion highlighted by a colorful procession from  23rd and South Street to the Schuylkill River where an offering of  fruit and flowers is made to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river. ODUNDE is also known for its authentic African marketplace featuring vendors from around the world selling merchandise from African nations, the Caribbean and Brazil.

The festival has a $30 million economic impact on State of Pennsylvania and a $28 million economic impact on the City of Philadelphia.

Each year, on the second Sunday  in June, ODUNDE takes place covering 15 city blocks and has 2 stages of live entertainment.  ODUNDE will be celebrating its 45TH year in the  traditional South Philadelphia location near 23rd and South street. The festival started in 1975 with a $100.00 grant and neighbors from Fernandez's South Philadelphia community. Since then the ODUNDE Festival has become a national model for cultural street festivals in the country.  The eclectic mix of vendors, entertainment, music, food, jewelry and African art  attracts people from around the WORLD.  ODUNDE IS FOR EVERYONE, WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THIS YEAR!!!
