Day 2 of a three-day event celebrating the revolutionary James Baldwin's 100th birthday in Philadelphia (Aug. 2, 3, 5).
Join us for an afternoon of music, dance, and art as we celebrate James Baldwin's 100th birthday. Cultural performances will include Palestinian music & dance, jazz, Chinese opera, Indian dance, African drums, Korean dance, and more.

This August, the people of Philadelphia will come together to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of JAMES ARTHUR BALDWIN (Aug. 2, 1924 – Dec. 1, 1987) with three days of music, dance, art, film, and discussion. We honor Baldwin as GOD'S REVOLUTIONARY VOICE: a literary, philosophical, cultural, artistic, and ideological genius, whose contributions to the revolutionary remaking of world humanity are bearing fruit today — as America and the world's people journey through a transition of epochs. We invite all to join us in answering Baldwin's revolutionary call for peace, and embracing his great task of achieving our nation.

Cumbia with a Mexican Jarocho flavor, Guachinangos features members from diverse cultural backgrounds. The band fuses Mexican son jarocho with Colombian cumbia and other Latin American rhythms.

DE RAIZ
From the vibrant music scene of New York City, the Latin alternative band DeRaiz has been captivating audiences for over 10 years with their fusion of traditional Latin rhythms and modern indie rock. Formed in 2013, the band blends elements of cumbia, salsa, and champeta with influences from rock, funk, and hip-hop.

Ryan Tennis (your host) will open the night. His music is all about dismantling boundaries and bringing people together. Genre-defiant by nature and with diversity at its core, his rousing songs are infused with the rhythms from the many countries he’s visited during his extensive tours. While his performances are dynamic and danceable, Tennis’ voice and songs have a disarming sweetness that lowers your defenses and lets you breathe easy.

“I make music with my whole body. I use my voice, my hands, my feet, my legs - my entire body. From this expression, I came up with a term called ‘vocussionist.’ And more than a singer...a vocussionist...that’s what I am.” - Bethlehem.
A Philadelphia native, Bethlehem has been singing since she was a child - singing by herself and vocalizing with her musical cousins. Performing around the region for over 15 years, she is in an-demand professional who has worked with numerous Philly artists and musicians, sung in churches and cafes to notable Philly venues/events including TEDx Philadelphia,The Kimmel Center, Sistah’s Attune and The Philadelphia Jazz Project.

The Oval pop-up festival returns to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway this July and runs for seven weekends. The family-friendly event features eight acres of food, drink, public art, games, and entertainment. The fun takes place at Eakins Oval, across from the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s famous steps. The 2024 Oval is co-organized by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and the Parkway Council.

A CONTRATIEMPO ENSEMBLE is one of the most versatile bands on the current music scene. They fuse a wide range of world music and electronic elements with their native Afro-Venezuelan roots to create a fresh and original urban sound, with a Latin heart.

The group uses conventional instruments and experiments with unconventional music and the elements of jazz improvisation, achieving unique beauty and spontaneity.
On that occasion they bring a super special concert to the city of Philadelphia, where they will be sharing the most select of their repertoire with the audience.
A CONTRATIEMPO ENSEMBLE is made up of Ángel Tolosa in the Arpa Venezolana, and José Luis Tolosa in the Cuatro Venezolano.

Since 2022, Baltimore bass clarinetist Todd Marcus and Toronto clarinetist Virginia MacDonald have been performing and touring together across the United States and Canada with their quintet. Their work together presents a lush ensemble that showcases the range of beauty and power by the clarinet in a modern jazz context, with repertoire comprised of original compositions by both bandleaders. They have performed at jazz festivals and prominent venues internationally and will release their debut album as co-leaders in 2025.
Their musical partnership showcases the versatility of the bass clarinet and clarinet, and captures audiences with a new and unique musical experience.

Martina Lecaros is a Chilean singer-songwriter, arranger and multi-instrumentalist. Her career to date includes three of her own albums (“Sintiendo” from 2010, “Araucaria” from 2012 and “Estelar” from 2018), as well as concerts in Brazil and Mexico. As a composer and lyricist, she has worked with names like Álvaro López (López) and Denisse Rosenthal. Her musical proposal began with soul and bossa nova, and over the years she added influences from Latin American music, pop and Rn’B.

Bahar Badieitabar:
Bahar Badieitabar is an Iranian Oud player and composer, recently graduated on a full scholarship with a double major in composition and performance from Berklee College of Music. At the age of 12, Bahar began her musical training at the Tehran Music School, where she earned her high school diploma in music. She studied under notable oud players, including Siavash Roshan, Negar Bouban, and Yurdal Tukcan. Bahar won first place at the Iranian Youth National Music Festival for two consecutive years at ages 16 and 17. She has performed as both a performer and composer at numerous venues, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, MCG Jazz, and Groton Hill Music Center, as well as at music festivals in Iran and the United States, collaborating with musicians of diverse backgrounds.
Niloufar Shiri:
Kamancheh player and composer Niloufar Shiri began her musical journey at the Tehran Music Conservatory in Iran. She later immigrated to the USA and pursued her studies in composition at the University of California, San Diego, and Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology (ICIT) at the University of California, Irvine.
Martin Shamoonpour is an autodidactic multi-instrumentalist, composer, actor, and visual artist from Tehran, Iran. Martin plays daf, tombak, flute, and Iranian folk woodwind instruments, and has performed in galleries and theaters throughout Iran. To date, Shamoonpour has composed and performed music for close to thirty theater productions in The City Theater of Tehran and has written, directed and performed his own one-man-show, Qatinu the Hero, at many of Iran’s most prominent artistic theaters.
