March 30, 2012 at 7:00 PM: Tertulia at Raices Culturales Latinoamericanas "Strong Rooted Perceptions: A Movie Series on Latino Culture"

WHAT: Strong Rooted Perceptions: A Movie Series on Latino Culture

WHEN: Friday, March 30, 2012 at 7:00 PM

WHERE: Crane Old School, 1417 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA

(corner of North 2nd & Master Streets)

COST: $5 admission

Starting this March, Raíces will present movies throughout the year that portray aspects of Latino culture. At the end of each featured film, guests will be invited to share their thoughts and opinions about the movie and how it depicted Latinos in an open discussion. Refreshments including popcorn and drinks will be sold to help Raices maintain its new space.

Centro de Oro
The program will start with a local documentary created by three non-profit local organizations including Raices, Taller Puertorriqueño, HACE (Hispanic Association of Contractors & Enterprises), and trained by Scribe Video. The documentary, titled Centro De Oro discusses the impact of ABC News Nightline's broadcast The Badlands: North Philadelphia. ABC News Nightline's broadcast by Ted Koppel generated a terrible image across the nation of Philadelphia's predominately Latino neighborhood in the 1990s. The documentary highlights how we can erase and change the negative images mainstream media always wants to give to Latinos.

Real Women Have Curves
Real Women Have Curves, starring America Ferreira, will be shown following the documentary in honor of International Women's Day, which is celebrated March 8. The film is a coming of age movie about Ana Garcia, a Mexican-American teenager living in the predominately Latino community of East Los Angeles, who struggles between her mainstream American ambitions and her cultural heritage.

Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas developed Strong Rooted Perceptions: A Movie Series on Latino Culture to provide the community with another opportunity to come together to explore Latino culture, challenge stereotypes and misperceptions, and most important to our mission, to find common ground.

March 29, 2012 7:00 PM Cuban Revolutionary Cinema: "Cecilia" FREE

Cuban Revolutionary Cinema: Cecilia
International House Philadelphia
3701 Chestnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19104

Thursday, March 29 at 7pm

Co-presented by the University of Pennsylvania's Cinema Studies Program, Center for Africana Studies, Departments of English and Hispanic Studies, and Latin American and Latina/o Studies.

dir. Humberto Solas, Cuba, 1983, digital video, 127 mins, color, Spanish w English subtitles

The film that is storied to have led to the temporary displacement of Alfredo Guevara from his presidency of the ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte y la Industria Cinematográficos), Cecilia has been heavily, if not scathingly, debated in circles of Cuban film and art critics. An adaptation of the 19th century novel Cecilia Valdés, the film radically reconceives the story of a mulata so light that she can "pass," and of such beauty that her one tool for an individual social shift is her very body. Afro-Cuban religions frame the entire cinematic narrative, which begins with a boldly and beautifully shot march of slaves and of Creole Catholics celebrating the Epiphany. The music being sung by one group and the other never blends, but pushes against each other and maintains the separation.

Patiently and compellingly, Cecilia conveys the paranoia that spread after the Haitian Revolution of 1794, the relations of criollo (a caste in the Spanish race-based colonial caste system) parents with aristocratic lusts and criollo young adults with ambiguously liberal political leanings, the violent anxieties of the system of slavery experienced by all at different intensities, and the instantiation of Independence, decolonization, as a long and bloody process.

March 22, 2012 Premiere of film "Tango Macbeth" at the Painted Bride Art Center

Maybe you read Macbeth in high school or college and studied the story of a commander named Macbeth who-with the help of his wife- killed family, friends, women and children to ascend to the throne of Scotland. You may think you know what will happen in our film version Tango Macbeth. Think again.

Synopsis: A theater company rehearses Macbeth at an old theater in Philadelphia. A documentary film crew follows them during the rehearsal process. Occasionally the actors become lost in Shakespeare’s world. This blend of intense drama, dance and humor is a refreshing take on Shakespeare’s classic text.

Quote from noted author Lorene Cary about the project: “Tango promises to bring out the extraordinary power of Lady Macbeth’s role, which will help viewers explore questions of shared responsibility for and profits from evil. This film will make a great contribution to the canon. It will also add an extraordinary opportunity for teachers and learners to find new paths into the Shakespearean classic.”
A documentary film crew follows the creation of a new dance theater film piece called Tango Macbeth. Actors come from all over the U. S. and abroad. Occasionally the cast gets lost in Shakespeare’s intense drama. Nadine Patterson directs her narrative feature film debut. Starring Alexandra Bailey, and Brian Anthony Wilson. Music by Lenny Seidman. Choreography by Zane Booker. Produced by Marlene G. Patterson.

Having escaped the ravages of slavery in the Americas, a group of West Africans joined with Carib Indians to form the Garifuna culture that has survived for over 212 years -- on self-reliance, sacred spirit-possession practices and dance moves. March 3, 2012 Alexis Cuadrado's Flamenco Jazz Project 8:00 PM at The Painted Bride Art Center

ALEXIS CUADRADO’S FLAMENCO JAZZ PROJECT

Alexis Cuadrado’s Noneto Iberico
March 3 | 8pm
$25 in advance, $30 day of show

“Noneto Ibérico…It’s like a whirlwind tour through gorgeous, lush flamenco grooves. Brimming with passion and spice, Cuadrado has accomplished something truly hot with this one.”
– Jazz, Blues & The Truth

Barcelona-born bassist-composer Alexis Cuadrado takes the Bride stage for the first time to perform music from his latest release, Noneto Iberico. Following his deep research into the roots of Spain’s Flamenco music, Cuadrado has extracted its bare-bone elements and reconstructed them using his very own aesthetic. Backed by his nine-piece ensemble, Cuadrado blends traditional Spanish Flamenco with improvisational idioms within contemporary jazz. His recent project takes a step beyond blends of flamenco and jazz previously introduced. Fans of both jazz and world music will experience Cuadrado breaking new ground along hybrid terrains, riding shotgun.

Each compositional piece of “Noneto Ibérico” is based on a specific flamenco arrangement style known as “Palo.” Each has its own complexities and idiosyncrasies: a specific form, rhythm, harmony and melodic twists – Cuadrado faithfully maintains these guidelines in every movement of his suite, assuring cultural authenticity while drawing on his resources from other musical sensibilities including jazz, world music, and chamber music.
