March 22-24, 2012 "DanceBrazil" at the Annenberg Center

For more than 30 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences throughout the world with a dazzling fusion of Afro-Brazilian culture, live music, contemporary dance and Capoeira, the African dance/martial arts form that evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement. Enjoy recent works Fluxo & Refluxo and catch a glimpse of Afro-Brazilian rituals in a contemporary context, followed by Banguela, a mesmerizing work built on the rhythmic interludes used by Capoeiristas (martial arts dancers) to calm down and strategize between intense cultural rituals. Under the direction of Artistic Director Jelon Vieira, DanceBrazil will wow audiences with its “crowd-pleasing style of high-octane, high-flying, pelvis swiveling choreography” (New York Times) and its colorful costumes, acrobatic virtuosity and soul-stirring rhythms.
