Sign Up for the 2015 Summer Music Program with Minas!

Do you love music? Have you ever played a musical instrument? Would you like to join other teens to learn authentic Brazilian songs and play real samba percussion instruments? During the next few weeks you'll learn about the country and culture of Brazil. Come to learn simple dance steps and even some words in Portuguese! Even if you don't have any musical experience, we'll teach you everything you'll need to know. There are only 20 spaces available so sign up soon!
Sign up for "Brazilian Adventure" by Minas. We will supply the intruments and all the equipment you'll need. There will be 10 classes and then a performance.
Classes take place at 2:00 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
July 7 & 8, July 14 & 15, July 21 & 22, July 28 & 29, August 4 & 5

The Community Education Center, more commonly known as the CEC, is an artists’ incubator and a bastion of creative activity! Located in West Philly’s University City in the federally designated Promise Zone, the center is housed in a former Quaker Meetinghouse and school built in 1901. As a nonprofit community art center the CEC has a 43-year history of community engagement.

The CEC brings people together in our physical 'space' while creating the conceptual space for artists to make work and share their work. Long before the phrase “artists incubator” became popular, the CEC was an innovator with exceptional programming, supporting performing artists in the development and presentation of their work and engaging community members across the divide of economic, cultural, and gender differences like no other space in the city. The CEC continues to play an important role in the lives of hundreds of artists and thousands of community members each year.

Mayor Dennis P. Williams and the City of Wilmington invite you to celebrate our nation's independence at the 2015 4th of July Celebration on the Wilmington Riverfront in Tubman-Garrett Park.

Beginning at 2:00 p.m., the day will be full of fun for the entire family with rides, games, and a 50-foot obstacle course, PLUS fireworks at dusk!

There will also be historical reenactments, arts and crafts, face painting, magicians, and various food and drink vendors. Enjoy the funky sounds of the Big Package Band, the pop dance rhythms of the G2 Band, and you will certainly enjoy the energy packed cutting edge musical experience from UGO who will rock you every second of the performance that will keep you dancing right up until the fireworks presentation.

Due to the July 4th festivities there will be road closures. All traffic going to the Riverfront will be closed at 8:30 p.m. At that time traffic will only be able to exit as all lanes will be directed out of the Riverfront area. In addition, the Market Street Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic at 5:00 p.m.

VIENTO CALLEJERO (Street Breeze) is a Los Angeles based Urban style Cumbia trio that formed in 2013. The group is composed of three talented musicians, Gloria Estrada on guitar, Federico Zuniga on bass, and Gabriel Villa on drums. The group has taken a unique approach to their musical endeavor by inviting and featuring a different guest vocalist for every performance. Thus creating a one-of-a-kind musical experience every time.

Together they bring a fresh approach to urban tropical music stripping it down to feature its rawest elements. With Cumbia making a resurgence, artists have been re-mixing and re-interpreting the Classic Cumbias in dance halls all over the world. VIENTO CALLEJERO represents the newest incarnation of the movement in Los Angeles, breaking down the rhythmic and melodic pulse of Cumbia Colombiana, Son Montuno, Merengue, Reggae, Dance Hall, Funk, and Rock to create a fresh sound with a new twist that is infectious to the listeners ears, hips, and feet.

SLV is New York-based multi-instrumentalist songwriters Sandra Lilia Velásquez and Sean Dixon. Velasquez is the founder of the Latin band Pistolera, and Dixon is the drummer for the experimental electronic band Zammuto. Together, they recorded the Dig Deeper EP (2013), produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, who also plays bass on the recording. Their debut album, This Kind, was released in the early May

Daniel de Jesus’ life as a musician been multifaceted; performing in orchestras, chamber ensembles, rock bands, and latin ensembles. Daniel has released two albums and an EP of his own original work under the moniker TivaTiva. Daniel’s music is multilayered in its influences of pop, classical, and rock sensibilities. Contextually, the music translates ideas of mysticism, spirituality, and mythic fantasy. His work has often been compared to the music of Jeff Buckley, David Bowie, Bjork, and Tori Amos.

Lisa and Naomi Diaz are the daughters of the late Cuban percussionist Anga Diaz. Naomi plays percussive instruments, the Cajon and the Batas, while Lisa plays piano. Together the twins have learned the songs of their father's culture, Yoruba.
Yoruba travelled from West Africa to Cuba with slavery in the 1700s. The Yoruba people have the highest twinning rate in the World, and twins occupy an important position within Yoruba culture. Ibeyi is pronounced "ee-bey-ee" and translates as "Twins" in Yoruban.

Ibeyi sing in English and Yoruban, and have created a minimalist sound that merges elements of their heritage with their natural love of modern music as teenagers growing up in Paris, citing artists such as James Blake and King Krule amongst their wide range of influences.

Ibeyi are currently recording their debut album for XL, with Richard Russell on production.

Come one, come all! To help bring in funds and share the vision of the Carnival, we'll be hosting a sushi dinner, music show and samba drum and dance party featuring Jon Felton and his Soulmobile, Caleb Lange, and Unidos da Filadelfia.

You’ll hear songs full of wanderlust, wonder for creation and longing for a better way! We’ll share fun tales of what the Carnival de Resistance has accomplished and where we’re heading! Then, we’ll shake it out at the end with our local samba school, and celebrate the Carnival way with drums and dancing!

Jon Felton & his Soulmobile share whimsical and bold songs full of beauty and struggle. Hailing from Frostburg, MD this thoughtful vision keeper acts as Village Captain to the Carnival de Resistance, ruling over our petrol free community kitchen, compost toilets, solar showers and foot pump water stations.

Caleb Lange draws from experiences of traveling the globe and being with the hurting, dirty, and dying in the world. His songs, full of honesty and challenge, sprout from the grief and the good works that he has encountered along the journey. Caleb has been an indispensable part of the Carnival productions and village life. He will be providing the awesome sushi dinner!

Unidos da Filadelfia is a community-based samba school modeled after the Carnaval parade organizations of Rio de Janeira and Salvador da Bahia in Brazil.

Miles Davis was not afraid of any kind of music. When the electric bug hit him, he went straight at it and shocked many with his ability to deliver a new groove to jazz music. Trumpeter Josh Lawrence and the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble put the juice in Davis’s electric. Songs include “Tutu,” “Full Nelson,” “Bitches Brew,” “Amandla,” and other late Davis favorites.

June 19, 2015 8:00 PM Clubhouse Concert with El Caribefunk and Rafael Pondé

The international summer of love continues on June 19th at the Clubhouse.

Our first featured, Rafael Pondé, is a cultural ambassador from Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, sent by his government to share Brazil's rich musical tradition with American audiences and musicians. Former guitarist of the Natiruts, he performs Reggae, Samba and other Afro-Brazilian with authentic Bahian flavor.

Closing the official part of the night, we'll have our summer residents, El Caribefunk, headline the night with their undeniable blend of Salsa, Funk, and Caribbean Music. Rumor has it they'll be making a video of the show, so come get your sweet dance moves on there!

Ryan Tennis will open the night with a short set, and there promises to be a good jam session after the featured acts!

Everyone is welcome, and snacks and drinks of all kinds are provided. $15 at the door pays the internationally touring acts and helps cover costs.

Experience three days of music, food and family fun including free concerts, arts and crafts, children’s activities, Latin dance presentations, and a Mariachi Mass. A celebration of the region’s Latino culture, ¡Sabor! features live music by local, regional and national musical acts, as well as cultural programming presented by community organizations such as the Hispanic American League of Artists (HALA), Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley, Borinqueneers and Latin American Motorcycle Association. The festival is an outreach program of the Sabor! Cultural Committee, which includes representatives from the region’s Latin community including Hispanic American League of Artists, Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley, Panorama and La Ola Radio.
