From AfroTaino Productions' newsletter, "Keeping You in the Loop"
"If Omnia Hegazy was not a musician, she might have been a journalist. The daughter of an Egyptian-Muslim father and an Italian-Catholic mother, she grew up in New York City as a citizen of the world, with an intense passion for music and storytelling. Her sound is informed by guitar-driven American pop/rock, maqam-based Arabic folk, and the politically-charged singer-songwriters of the past and present. Since the release of her first two EPs, “Jailbird” and “Judgment Day” (respectively), Hegazy’s music and messages of Fem-powerment have crossed international lines, into Europe & the Arab world. Not one to shirk from controversial topics, Hegazy proudly uses her talent to sing against the harsh conditions for many of her Arabic-speaking sisters. Her videos pop up frequently in the MTV world, and she’s been featured in various media news sources including The Huffington Post, Fox News, The Daily Beast, and pan-Arab newspaper Al Sharq Al Awsat. Controversy aside, Omnia is a lovely gal. Very supportive to fellow singer-songwriter communities all over, she’s a trained classical violinist, and a graduate of the prestigious Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. We first collaborated with Omnia in December of 2014 with an intimate show at that other fun spot, A Seed on Diamond Gallery. She previewed some material from her upcoming full-length album, as well as sparked a belly-dancing mini-flashmob at the finale of her set. She’s coming back to Philadelphia for a free Sunday Noon show at the Reading Terminal Market, and she said that you’re all invited. Please don’t arrive with expectations of a belly-dancing flashmob. But please do arrive with an appreciation of multicultural melodies, and be open-minded and open-hearted to her musical message."
