"GUITARIST/COMPOSER PAPO GELY WARMS UP YOUR WEEKEND!
“Yo prefiero ver el mundo a través de mis gafas oscuras” translates to “I prefer to see the world from behind my dark sunglasses”. These lyrics, once belted by a young latin star named Ricky Martin, supported by his bandmates in the Latin power-pop machine called MENUDO. The writer/producer of that song, Papo Gely, then generating pop melodies for mass consumption, has seen the heights of stardom and more. Instead of staying on the sweet, saccharin-ized road of pop music, Gely gathered some of his best musical friends and formed Blues Montuno, a project that served as the template for what can now be referred to as the Papo Gely sound.
That sonic combination consists of lofty, suave guitar strums & soothing melodies that go hand-in-hand with hammocks, sunsets, and ocean views; poignant, romantic lyrics bobbing in rhythm like waves against a boat; and his guitar sings through the speakers, ascending notes like a bird in flight. His trademark ‘rock-n-rumba’ sound is what keeps the audiences smiling, moving, and loving. If you come to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Friday July 17th, the ongoing Art After 5 series is inviting you all the feel the tropical energy of Papo Gely & band. We suggest you do it. No dark sunglasses required."
