May 25, 2016 7:30-8:30 PM Take It Away Dance at the Passyunk Square Singing Fountain

What is National Tap Dance Day?

National Tap Dance Day falls on May 25 every year and is a celebration of tap dancing as an American art form. National Tap Dance Day was ...signed into American law by President George H.W. Bush on November 8, 1989.[1] [It] was the brainchild of Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval, and Linda Christensen. They deemed May 25 appropriate for this holiday because it is the birthday of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, a significant contributor to tap dance. (Source: Wikipedia).

Cool! Does Philadelphia have a celebration?

This year, YES! Take It Away Dance and The Philadelphia Community Tap Project are hosting a National Tap Dance Day celebration on Wednesday, May 25, 7:30-8:30 pm, at Passyunk Square's Singing Fountain, South 11th St. and Passyunk Avenue. We are planning a few short sets, accompaniment by Drum Like a Lady, challenges and of course, the shim sham!

Planning to join us? Want to do more?

GREAT! Email us at takeitawaydance@gmail.com and let us know if you'd like to participate in any way. You can bring a board, an instrument, your shoes or suggest something for the program. Suggesting ideas, volunteering and just spreading the word is much appreciated!

Is there a city organization that allowed this awesome thing to happen?

Yes! This event has been approved by PARC (Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation). The only rules are that we keep it clean, don't sell anything and don't block traffic!

*The Passyunk Square Farmers Market is happening until 7! So we might not get going until 7:30.*

Amir ElSaffar (NYC):

Trumpeter, santur player, vocalist, and composer Amir ElSaffar has distinguished himself with a mastery of diverse musical traditions and a singular approach to combining Middle Eastern musical languages with jazz and other styles of contemporary music. A recipient of the 2013 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, ElSaffar has been described as "uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music without doing either harm," (the Wire) and "one of the most promising figures in jazz today" (Chicago Tribune).

Sam Shalabi (Montreal/Cairo):

"Sam Shalabi is nothing if not prolific. His numerous recordings place him in a category of his own. The completely solo Music for Arabs is a carefully assembled musical sound collage that reflects post-revolution urban Egypt (Cairo, more specifically, where he lives). Shalabi portrays his impressions across six tracks on which he plays all the instruments, from drums and Arabic percussion instruments to daf, mazhar, oud, rabat, salamiyyah, zummara, harmoniums, and keyboards, as well as guitars, samplers, and drum machines. Also playing a large role are overheard street and marketplace conversations repurposed through tape manipulation.

Lael Jones was born September 11, 1986 in Philadelphia to Samuel and Eleanor Jones. Lael Jones gained her love for music and the drums through church. She says her first love will always be drums even though she's moving to impact the world other ways through the music industry.
Lael has been playing since the age of 12. She was 15 when her mom got her professional lessons at Temple University it was a program for high-school students , because there wasn't music offered at her high school.
At Temple she learned basic Music Theory and learned to read for snare drum and drum set. After graduating high school she continued education in music at Community College of Philadelphia studying music education and performance.
As a professional drummer Lael has played on many big stages and continues to play for different artists and bands . Lael doesn't play for the fame; she plays because she couldn't live or breathe without it. It's part of her life .

Her style is very soulful and you can feel her when she plays . Lael says "The one thing I want to always see is someone in the audience rocking their head to my beat; my pocket has to always be strong!!!"

This is an open jam session that is FREE & OPEN to ALL!

May 17, 2016 7:00 PM Samba Jazz Trio at Rittenhouse Soundworks

Jim, Ryan, and Stephen Guerra will interpret a set of some of the best and most well known sambas of composer-musicians Tom Jobim and Baden Powell. That such a particular homage should be paid to these two masters outside of Brazil is fitting: they were the ones to make the samba of Rio (in the new style) famous in the US and Europe, respectively.

Let's have some fun at this super-chill, inviting venue!

==Casino for Beginners==
If you've ever wondered how to apply what you've learned in our rueda de casino classes to social dancing, this is your chance. Casino, sometimes called "Cuban salsa," is a style of partner dance that is done in Cuba, the US, and worldwide. This series is intended for absolute beginners or for those who want to get a better grasp of the fundamentals of the dance. We will focus on clean footwork, body movement/styling, and concepts for good leading and following, as well as fundamental moves that allow you to dance socially through a whole song without choreography.

==Fundamentals of Son==
By popular demand, we are bringing back our "son" workshop series. What is son? Son is a traditional style of Cuban music and dance that has roots in European music and African rhythms, which come together to produce a distinctive style that is both elegant and dynamic. Son became popular in the early 20th century, and subsequently went on to influence the development of casino, salsa, and many other musical styles.

This workshop series will focus on the fundamentals of son, including musicality, body movements, and timing (dancing "a contratiempo" or "on 2"). Aside from learning how to dance son in a social setting, the lessons will help to enrich your casino dancing with a better understanding of the roots of the dance and musicality. We promise that you will never hear/feel Cuban music the same way again!

== For our more advanced dancers: if you are feeling left out, don't you worry! We plan on having another 3 week series after this one with intermediate casino and intermediate son lessons. Stay tuned for more information! ==

==Instructors==
Michael Huang and Leilani Chirino are rueda, casino, and son instructors at Philly Con Sabor, with an extensive background in dancing and performing. Michael's dance experience comes primarily from Cuban dance, while Leilani is also trained in classical ballet. Aside from weekly rueda de casino lessons, Leilani and Michael have taught son workshops in Philadelphia and at the Rueda Exchange in New York City. They are both great instructors - patient, knowledgeable, and passionate about Cuban dance and culture!

To support the event and travel costs of the mestres, we are throwing a fundraiser concert with an incredible line-up. Come join us for a night of music, drinks and dancing!

FICA-PHILADELPHIA CAPOEIRA ANGOLA DEMONSTRATION

HARDWORK MOVEMENT

Hardwork Movement is a 21st Century Hip-Hop group based out of Philly. We aim to make music that is inclusive, original, and inspires all listeners to strive towards uniqueness in all that they do. We believe that the power of the group is much stronger than the power of the individual, and we aim to push ourselves and those around us to new heights inside and outside of the music.

DRUM LIKE A LADY

Drum Like a Lady is an organization whose mission is to provide a safe space for women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs and lifestyles to express their uniqueness through collective drumming, dance, music education and mental health advocacy. Founded in 2014, in response to the discriminatory and sexist practices observed in the drumming community, Drum Like a Lady encourages women, and young girls alike, to see the drum as a healing instrument, a community tool, and one of the most powerful and effective methods of non-verbal communication known to humanity. Unfortunately, Western culture has indoctrinated us (women) to see the drum as masculine, loud, dominant, and aggressive, all of which is anti-female. Through the Drum Like a Lady jam sessions, musicians at all skills levels, ranging from the novice to the world traveler, are invited to share in the creation and celebration of a new soundscape – rooted in improvisation and inspired by the beauty of femininity.

AMA CHANDRA

Songwriter Ama Chandra (the name “Ama” is of Ghanaian origin), brings to the microphone a voice that is the convergence of gospel, jazz, and soul-inspired vocals. From her humble beginnings in Plant City, Florida, Ama has firmly established herself as a citizen of the world, thanks in great part to time spent in Brazil, learning Portuguese, learning how to play the berimbau (a single stringed percussion instrument used to accompany the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira, which she also studied extensively), and internalizing the syncopation that is the core of Brazilian music.

Donation: $10

**Drinks will be on sale throughout the event.

May 14, 2016 8:00 PM Kendrah and Shamika Work in Progress Concert at The Kimmel Center

Join our Jazz Residency artists for the opportunity to experience a work in progress! After months of workshops and preparation, each artist will present an intimate session, showcasing their unfinished collaborative projects in SEI Innovation Studio. Through these works in progress, audiences will have an opportunity to experience the reality and rawness of the creative process.

Project: The presence of Jazz and Faith of the African American experience

Project Description: 'This three prong work will seek to acknowledge the presence of jazz and faith of the African American experience to music. We are writing this body of work as a means to acknowledge contributions of African Americans to the jazz and faith experience. Many composers from Mary Lou Williams to Duke Ellington acknowledge the presence of faith in their music and composed as well as performed within these idioms. We seek to further this meeting of musical genres of faith and jazz to broaden and deepen the definition of what jazz music can be.'
