November 6, 2016 3:00-5:00 PM Latin Dancing at the Top of the Art Museum Steps

Good news, the weather is with us this weekend!

This will be very casual/spontaneous, there will be no actual DJ: we will just meet up somewhere in front of the museum entrance and use a portable speaker.

If you are interested in visiting the museum, it will be the perfect day: 1st Sunday of the month is "pay what you wish" AND there is a temporary exhibition about the Mexican Revolution!

More details:

- we will start at 3pm and leave shortly after 5pm, so come on time if you want to get enough dances! If someone wants to take the lead to keep things going after 5pm, please contact me - and have a playlist ready.

- to find us, go up the steps and follow the music. If for any reason (grumpy museum guards etc) we are asked to leave, we will relocate nearby the fountain and I will post here.

- please be careful (don't go too close to the steps) and respectful of visitors. Collect all your belongings and don't leave trash.

- expect a playlist dominated by bachata, with some salsa. We could play a couple cha-cha if there is interest. We won't have anything on the extra-sensual side.

- sound volume will be improved by using two speakers instead of one.

Open jam session series featuring multi-instrumentalist and music educator, Corey Mark

Hosted by LaTreice Victoria @drumlikealady

Corey Mark, multi-instrumentalist and drummer of 23 years, seeks to answer these questions through music:
Where are you going?
Where have you come from?
If anyone asks you,
I hope you can say.
- Tony Williams, Lifetime
Reaching back to re-call our pasts, while seeing forward to potential futures, Corey's artistic sensibilities are as influenced by speculative fiction and the shared fight for liberation, as by other art in life daily.

Corey has the opportunity to share his love of music at the School of Rock Philadelphia, where he has acted as drum instructor and show director for the past four years. And, you can find Corey performing with groups: Upholstery (drum kit); SWARM (bass); York Street Hustle (congas & percussion); and the John Byrne Band (bass). Two artists who exemplify the standards for creativity and exploration at the venerable Blue Note Records will come together for a first-time collaboration in the Chucho Valdes – Joe Lovano Quintet. Pianist Chucho Valdes, who first appeared on Blue Note in 1985, has been a key figure in the evolution of Afro-Cuban jazz for the past 50 years while saxophonist Joe Lovano, who started at that label in 1990, has recorded more albums on Blue Note than any other artist. November 4, 2016 7:00-9:00PM Beats, Brews, and Banter with Charlie Hall (The War on Drugs)

Philly Drum Project presents Beats, Brews, & Banter with Charlie Hall of The War on Drugs at the GRAND OPENING of Philadelphia Drum & Percussion!

Friday, November 4th
7:00pm – 9:00pm
Free | 21+ to drink

Philly Drum Project is excited to partner with Philadelphia's brand new DRUM SHOP, Philadelphia Drum & Percussion. Come join us at their Grand Opening Event this Friday. We'll be there from 7-9pm for the return of Beats, Brews, & Banter.

Beats, Brews, & Banter is a free event that gives local drummers, musicians, and wannabes a chance to network, share ideas, and learn from some of the best drummers in the area. Our guest this time is The War on Drugs' own explosive rhythm machine, Charlie Hall!

Here's what Dave Hartley had to say about Charlie: "Charlie Hall never took lessons and doesn't spend much of his limited time off from touring with The War on Drugs practicing rudiments or increasing his limb independence - that's because things like "spirit" and "musicality" can't be learned from a youtube clip or a Hal Leonard book. More than any other instrument, drums expose the personality of the player. Ultra-busy drummers are usually motormouths, light hitters are usually quiet or passive and bashers are usually alpha dogs. As both a human and a drummer, Charlie is a master conversationalist. Lots of drummers will tell you that listening is as important as playing and that what you don't play is more important than what you do - but few can truly implement it as well as Charlie Hall has in his career with Tommy Guerrero, Jet Black Crayon, Windsor for the Derby, Jens Lekman and now The War on Drugs."

Philly Drum Project is a Percussive Collective, founded in 2011, dedicated to making drumming more accessible in the Philadelphia area by helping those in our region share lessons, beats, and gear in an environment where community, creativity, education, and diversity are valued. Beats, Brews, & Banter is held every month and has featured such drummers as Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Spanky McCurdy (Jill Scott, Lady Gaga), David Uosikkinen (The Hooters), and Fred Berman (Amos Lee). November 4th, 2016 7:00 PM The Pedrito Martinez Group at The Painted Bride with Philly Con Sabor

Join us for our pre-show activities at 7pm! Philly con Sabor will perform rueda de casino, a dynamic group dance which is done in a circular formation. There will also be a short introductory rueda de casino lesson afterwards. No prior dance experience or partners necessary!

The Pedrito Martinez Group hits the Bride stage with tracks from their new album Habana Dreams.

Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, Sept 12, 1973 and was raised in the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana and began his musical career at the age of 11, performing as vocalist and percussionist with such Cuban legends as Tata Guines and Yoruba Andabo.

Since settling in New York City in the fall of 1998, Pedrito has recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Eddie Palmieri, Paquito D’Rivera, Bruce Springsteen and Sting and has contributed to well over 75 albums.

A consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum, he is also the world’s first-call rumbero—playing, singing, and dancing with dozens of groups and contributing to or appearing in several important films, including Calle 54 (2000) and Chico and Rita (2010).

Mr. Martinez was a founding member of the highly successful, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band, Yerba Buena, with which he recorded two albums and toured the world.

His career as a leader, began in 2005 with the formation in NYC of the The Pedrito Martinez Group with fans that include Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, Steve Gadd, Wynton Marsalis, Taj Mahal and Quincy Jones.

The Pedrito Martinez Group’s, Grammy-nominated, first studio album, was released October, 2013 and features special guests, Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield and Steve Gadd. The album was chosen among NPR’s Favorite Albums of 2013 and The Boston Globe Critics Top Ten Albums of 2013.”

“Habana Dreams”, PMG’s second album, recorded largely, in Cuba in October 2015, includes guests such as Ruben Blades, Isaac Delgado, Wynton Marsalis, Descemer Bueno, Roman Diaz, Angelique Kidjo, and Telmary Diaz.

Philadelphia's own rumba and rueda casino dance group, Philly Con Sabor, will be opening the show and giving some lessons, so come early!

October 29, 2016 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM Day of the Dead Celebration at Penn Museum

Day of the Dead—Día de los Muertos—Celebration at the Penn Museum
Puts a Spotlight on Mexican State of Veracruz Saturday October 29, 11 am to 4 pm

Penn Museum, in conjunction with the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia and the Mexican Cultural Center, presents the fifth annual Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead Saturday, October 29, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, throughout the galleries of the international museum of art, archaeology and world cultures. Ghoulish skeletons and macabre decorations abound, but make no mistake: Day of the Dead is anything but somber. It’s a vibrant cultural celebration, rich in traditions and connections—it is at heart a celebration of life.

Pageantry and puppetry, music and folkloric dance, paper maché artistry, sugar skull and paper flower making, face painting, and special foods are part of the day. Renowned Philadelphia artist and muralist Cesar Viveros creates the celebration’s centerpiece, an elaborate Day of the Dead altar, in the Veracruz, Mexico style.

Everyone is invited to bring a photo and a memento of their own to place at a communal altar, remembering the passing of a loved one. Day of the Dead or Halloween costumes are encouraged, and costumed guests under age 12 receive half price general admission to the day. Guests dressed in a Day of the Dead-themed costume such as La Catrina, or as a traditional Mexican icon like Frida Kahlo, can join a parade and costume contest at 3:30 pm.

The Day of the Dead Celebration is free with Penn Museum admission ($15, general admission; $13, seniors [65+]; $10, children [6-17] and full-time students [with ID]; $2 ACCESS Card holders; free to children under 5, members, active U.S. Military, STAMP and PennCard holders).

The Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia, the Mexican Cultural Center, and regional community groups join the Museum to make the afternoon possible. The celebration, the first event in the Museum’s World Culture Day series, is made possible in part with generous support from the Philadelphia Cultural Fund and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Telemundo, Visit Philly (Philly Te Ama) and Al Día News Media, are sponsors for the day.

Welcome and a Special Focus

America’s first World Heritage City, Philadelphia is a global city, and this year the celebration puts a spotlight on the Mexican state of Veracruz. Alicia Kerber, Mexico Consul in Philadelphia who officially welcomes the guests at 11:00 am, explains: “With this celebration, we’d also like to recognize the new and growing trade partnership between Veracruz and Philadelphia through the ship line route that connects both ports. We are sure this connection will go beyond trade and will make Mexican culture and traditions flow in as an example of how building bridges can play a key role in constructing a more united and better world. “

Guests will be treated to a popular Veracruz export: the energetic music of the New York-based group Radio Jarocho, performing with renowned singer Zenen Zeferino. Philadelphia’s own Son revoltura/Philly son jarocho joins in the day. Son jarocho music, gaining popularity worldwide, has its roots in Veracruz.

CENTERPIECE AND REMEMBRANCE: Juan Gabriel (1950 – 2016)

The modern Mexican Day of the Dead holiday is a rich blending of traditions, its origins tracing back to beliefs and activities of indigenous peoples of Central and South Mexico, as well as Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Throughout Mexico and around the world, the Day of the Dead brings family and friends together in a jovial manner to pray for and remember deceased loved ones.

Creating ornate Day of the Dead altars is one of the most important traditions in Mexican, Mexican-American, and Latino communities worldwide. The altars typically have three levels: one for food and flower offerings to those who have died; one that touches on religious traditions, including the pre-Hispanic tradition that to remember someone is to “bring them back” among the living, and; a final level which dedicates the altar to someone.

This year’s central altar, designed by Cesar Viveros in the Veracruz style, and built with help from the Mexican Consul in Philadelphia staff members, honors popular singer/songwriter Juan Gabriel (born Alberto Aguilera Valadez), born January 7, 1950, who died suddenly of a heart attack August 28 of this year. Additional altars created by community members are also on display.

Schedule for the Day

Beginning at 11:00 am, guests of all ages can join in the celebration with face painting, tissue paper flower making, and shopping amongst Mexican craft vendors. Beginning at 1:00 pm, guests can decorate sugar skulls at an afternoon craft station. Food is very much a part of Day of the Dead celebrations, and guests may sample traditional sweet “pan de muerto” buns and spicy hot chocolate, Maya-style, while supplies last.

At 11:15 am, the Grupo de Danza Nuevo México of Philadelphia performs traditional Mexican folk dances. Marionette puppets from the Mexican Cultural Center perform twice: at an 11:45 show, and again at 1:30 pm.

Philadelphia’s Son revoltura/Philly son jarocho perform at 12:30 pm, and join Radio Jarocho for a rousing final set at 2:30 pm.

The Penn Museum’s Mexico and Central America gallery features art and artifacts from the ancient Maya and other pre-Hispanic cultures of the region.

Beginning at 3:30 pm, judges announce the winners for best community altars, and guests in traditional Day of the Dead costumes are invited to join a procession to end the day.

October 19, 2016 10:00AM - 1:00PM Diasporic Movement Practice Series with Lela Aisha Jones

Diasporic Movement Practice Series
With Lela Aisha Jones

Wednesdays 10/19 and 11/16 10am-1pm
Diasporic Movement Practice (DMP): Taught by Lela Aisha Jones (and many before and after her), DMP's are contemporary movement practices grounded in dance cultures and traditions of African and Black peoples. Lela's strongest foundations in her diasporic movement practice are dances common in southern United States (primarily Florida), Guinea, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, and northeastern Brazil (primarily Salvador, Bahia). She also brings to her teaching a wide range of gestural, socially conscious, spiritual, modern dance, and improvisational tools and inspirations.

October - DMP | Diaspora Unbound is a journey into the creative potential of the spiritual, conceptual, and physical energies that exist in movement of African descent and cultures of Black peoples. Itoffers poly-sensing as an addition to the already well established poly-rhythmic approaches to movement that are vibrant and alive within diasporic movement cultures. Expect a class or workshop that provides exhilarating body discoveries with unexpected physical explosion and intricate narratives. In this class you will experience physicalities derived from movement practices in the U.S. and the broader diasporic experience.

November - DMP | Merges Diverges (Swing, Drop, Two Step, Triplets, Bounce): Movement styles of diasporic lineage collide and converge as Lela Aisha Jones has discovered in her experience, embodiment, research, and artistic migrations through African descendant traditions and cultures of Black peoples. In this session let your body defy time and fall into the depth of complexity. Expect to experience time lapse conversions of moving bodies over generations, such as the city boy slide (from the 1990s Florida-dirty-dirty-teen-club-life) as akin to KuKu/KouKou (a long lineaged Guinean dance). Also expect to embody physicalities that make these dances so importantly their own creation and from their own time.
