Felipe Salles’ Ugandan Suite is a unique experience for music students and music lovers alike. In the words of Damascus Kafumbe, Ph.D., “it is the first major jazz music composition to use Ugandan musical idioms, which he intelligently integrates with Western musical forms.”
Dr. Felipe Salles conceptualized this project in 2011, when he traveled to Uganda. The experience of working with local artists, and visits to the music departments of Makerere University, Kyambogo University, gave him the opportunity to collect the musical material he documented and analyzed after this trip, which was the inspiration for the Ugandan Suite. Dr. Kafumbe ads: “Through this work, Felipe presents a fresh interpretation of the country’s regional ethnic soundscapes, which have received minimal attention from composers as a primary source of inspiration.”
The Ugandan Suite is also thematically inspired by Africa’s legendary “Big Five”, and Uganda’s wildlife. Each piece attempts to portray the character of the animal from which it takes its name. The Felipe Salles Group, originally a quartet, comes to this project in the form of a septet: two woodwind players, two percussionists (Brazilian and African), piano, bass, and drum set.

1pm: Brazilian Rhythms Workshop with Rogerio Boccato
An overview of the Brazilian sound and musical language through a hands-on exploration of the percussion instruments used in various rhythms and styles in the Brazilian music world. We will work on the various patterns that compose key rhythms of some of the most important, and some not-so-well-known, Brazilian grooves, playing together as a percussion section.
2:15pm: Ugandan Music Workshop with Dr. Damascus Kafumbe
Dr. Damascus Kafumbe will lead a workshop that will introduce participants to various musical Africanism through interactive performances of Ugandan musics. Surveyed musical Africanisms will include complex polyphony, musical conversation, structured improvisation, recurrent patterns, layered ostinati, timbral variety, and tonal variations.
