Taller Puertorriqueño invites you to join us for our Noche de Paz (Silent Night) Parranda and support Taller, its programs, and our community. We will welcome supporters and community members for en evening of music, food, and fellowship to lift our spirits in holiday celebration during these difficult times.
Many of us have experienced anxiety and uncertainty about the wellbeing of family, friends, and neighbors following recent disasters, from earthquakes in Mexico, to hurricanes in the gulf and the Caribbean, to wildfires on the West Coast. In the case of Puerto Rico, limited access to direct communication with loved ones combined with disturbing images of devastation and the lack of basic items for survival have made this a particularly difficult time for our community.
In response to these concerns, Taller has partnered with other Latino community leaders and organizations to form Unidos PA’PR, dedicated to raising money, coordinating services and providing desperately needed essentials. While addressing these growing crises, Taller has continued to provide programming and events for people in our community and across the region. As we approach the end of this difficult year, we hope you can join us for this especially meaningful event: our Noche de Paz Parranda.

December 3, 2017 7:30PM Crossroads Concerts: INNOV GRAWA Devotional Music from Morocco
Innov Grawa: Devotional Music from Morocco
Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco. Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer, Innov has delved deep into the roots and rituals of gnawa music, and made a big splash in NYC, playing some of the city’s most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl and the storied backroom of Brooklyn’s Barbès.
For the uninitiated, gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston and rock god Jimi Hendrix. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

November 28, 2017 Giving Tuesday for Philly Drum Project's Rhythm Sessions
#GivingTuesday for Rhythm Sessions
Philly Drum Project is dedicated to making drumming more accessible in the Philadelphia region by helping those in our community share knowledge, beats, and gear. We're teaming up with our members, artists, and friends to expand music education accessible in Philadelphia. Whose team are you on? Choose from the Perk list on the right. Your $10 gift will make a huge impact on our community!
We're participating in #GivingTuesday to relaunch our Re-Drum Rhythm Sessions - free community center group drum lessons! In 2015, you helped us fund the pilot program of Re-Drum Rhythm Sessions, to refurbish 2 unwanted drumsets and provide them to the community for weekly group drum lessons for the community. Students learn about the role of the drumset in rock, jazz, reggae, and hip hop, and have had a safe community to get involved with after school once a week. The class also focuses on peer mentorship, as older, more experienced players help the younger players. It's an important program to make sure that everyone in Philly has access to quality musical education and instruments.
We need to raise $2000 in just one day! We need YOU to join a #team and give just $10 to help support Rhythm Sessions by running another program in North Philly AND add a second location in West Philly! That's why your donation of 10 bucks makes a huge difference in making sure that students in the city have the resources to learn drums, regardless of their experience or financial background. Help us make a difference!
*Thanks to our fiscal sponsor, CultureTrust Philadelphia, your donation is now tax-deductible!
To donate, click on this link, and claim the perk for #TeamLasswell. Any size donation is greatly appreciated!

November 28, 2017 7:00-9:00PM Producers' Forum: Gurumbé Afro-Andalusian Memories
directed by M. Ángel Rosales (Spain/Mexico/Portugal/Senegal, 2016, 72 min) Spanish with English subtitles
MIGUEL ANGEL ROSALES IN PERSON
Today Europe’s southern borders are shielded with barbed wire and fences, but once a trade flourished here that forcibly kidnapped thousands of African men and women into exile and exploitation. Giving voice to its Afro Andalusian memories, Gurumbé leads us to question Spanish identity, reminding us that África is weaved into its fabric.
Miguel Ángel Rosales is an Andalusian anthropologist and documentary filmmaker. His contact with cinema began at a very young age following his father across the South of Spain projecting films in local cinemas. Miguel Angel studied at the Conservatory of Music in Granada and later directed musical, theatrical and audiovisual projects. In 2004 he began his first projects as a documentary film maker. Gurumbé is Miguel’s his first feature film.
Preceded by Ione Nash – Her Life, Her Art (2013, 23 mins) by Arthur Hall Afro-American Dance Ensemble Alumni. A pioneer in the Dance Arts, Ione Nash has made a significant contribution to African dance in Philadelphia and the US through her belief that passionate expression of feeling is at the heart of great dance. A production of Scribe Video Center’s Community Visions.

at Taller Puertorriqueño, 2600 N. 5th St Philadelphia, PA 19133

The Kimmel Center is about to turn up the heat on MONDAY like Philly has never felt before with La NOCHE - a once-a-month FREE LIVE LATIN MUSIC & DANCING event.
The party will get started with the La NOCHE house band and then light up the floor with "Dos Santos: Anti-Beat Orquesta" who will bring their Latin sound with a spicy twist. There will also be a mini dance lesson and music by DJ Kevin Ngo to get your Salsa & Bachata on.
Mark your calendar and please help share this exciting news by sharing, tagging & inviting.

Dos Santos: Anti-Beat Orquesta is a Chicago-based band that rocks the sounds of popular Latin dance genres with psychedelic flare, from Colombian Cumbia to Afro-Caribbean Salsa. Recently voted Chicago's Best Emerging Artist of 2015 by the Deli Magazine's Readers Poll, their gritty and grassroots approach captures the “golden age” of streamlined tight-knit ensembles of the 1970s and 80s that shook sweatbox dance floors with fierce energy all over Latin America—honest dance music with no frills and no fear, anchored by reverb-slathered guitars, Hammond organ, and syncopated percussion.

November 19, 2017 7:00-11:00PM Loose Ends featuring Jane Eugene and Urban Guerilla Orchestra
When Loose Ends emerged out of the London soul underground in 1980 with the single “In the Sky,” the group was so far ahead of its time that today, in 2016, its sound is as refreshing and vibrant as ever. Their vibe signaled the dawning of a new age of synthesizer and rhythm machine-driven grooves, channeling the Islands and the lushest, jazziest of soul – as much of a splash down into Caribbean Sea as the Milky Way. With international career defining hits such as “Hanging On A String (Contemplating),” “Choose Me (Rescue Me),” “You Can’t Stop The Rain,” “A Little Spice,” “Slow Down,” “Stay a Little While Child,” “Watching You” and a delicious cover of Philly Soul maestro Dexter Wansel’s “The Sweetest Pain,” Loose Ends defined a refined approach to sexy soulful sounds – from the club floor to the Quiet Storm.
Today, original lead vocalist/songwriter Jane Eugene leads a United States-based edition of Loose Ends that is carrying the blue-flame torch with pride and much success. Under Jane’s leadership, Loose Ends is wowing audiences in several capacities. So relevant yet nostalgic, fluid yet flexible is their sound that Loose Ends is compatible enough to share sold out bills with classic soul legends such as Isley Brothers, Charlie Wilson, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, the Whispers and Parliament-Funkadelic, current hit-makers JOE, Faith Evans and Leelah James, Smooth Jazz wind downs with Roy Ayers, Brian Culbertson and Will Downing, and, of course, their `80s techno-soul peers such as the S.O.S. Band, Midnight Star and Evelyn “Champagne” King. Loose Ends and its infectious international sound sit comfortably in the middle of all these styles and generations. This now classic band in its own right connects the dots to all top-shelf Soul music, creating a vibration that reverberates within a listener with 360 degree intensity..
The Urban Guerilla Orchestra, (home grown products of Philadelphia) also known as “U.G.O.” is a professional R&B sensation. We are a high energy; power packed band, consisting of accomplished musicians with incomparable touring and recording resumes.
We infuse a live concert act to your event and are known for perfection in musical execution and a high quality of musicianship. U.G.O. plays 1970’s party classics to current top of the chart hits, as well as jazz standards, big band/swing, Sinatra and much more. Make no mistake U.G.O is an experience.
The Urban Guerilla Orchestra consists of the following: UGO Horns, Henri McMillian, Jr. (Trumpet), Louis Taylor, Jr. (Saxophone), Don Collins, (Trombone), Rhythm Section, Wendell Sewell (Guitar), Terrence Tyler (Bass), Bryan Williams (Keyboards), Daryl “Kwasi” Burgee (Percussions), Vocalists, Lawrence “Weas” Newton, Na’eemah Harper and Paula Holloway.
U.G.O .was put together for one reason… to bring back soul music the way it is meant to be, with incredible soul stirring performances.

November 17, 2017 8:00PM Big Sam's Funky Nation with Darla at Ardmore Music Hall
Noladelic PowerFunk. That’s the sound Big Sam’s Funky Nation have been whipping up for more than a decade. It’s high-energy music that mixes funk, rock & roll, hip-hop, and jazz into the same pot, glueing everything together with the brassy influence — and heavy grooves — of New Orleans.
Darla is an 8-piece progressive funk group from Philadelphia. The band’s sound is a melding of its raw origin in the Philly basement scene and keen compositional focus on feeling the groove. At its core, the Darla sound is driven by a powerful horn section that wields a lyrical and catchy sense of phrasing. Their efforts are matched by a jarring and methodical rhythm section that has been described as ‘Steely Dan with Dave Grohl on drums.'
Doors: 7:30 pm / Show: 8:00 pm

November 8, 2017 7:00-8:00PM Afro-Cuban Dance Technique with Live Drumming
Afro-Cuban Technique class, with live drumming by Omi Itunú!
Wednesday 11/8
7-8pm
Sound Space (2511 West Girard Avenue, Philadelphia)
$12
The class is suitable for dancers of all levels.
=================================================
Relatively obscure in the United States due to the infamous Cuban embargo, Afro-Cuban Modern dance or "Tecnica Cubana" is a unique blend of North American modern technique (Duncan, Graham, Limón) and European ballet (Ballet Alicia Alonso) with social and sacred Afro-Cuban traditions. The class will start with a warm-up focused on contraction and release techniques and undulation exercises, followed by across-the-floor and choreographed combinations.
Leilani Chirino started dancing at the age of three at the Conservatorio de las Artes de Conchita Espinosa, a Cuban arts academy started in Havana. She later became a principal dancer for the company of Ada Linares, specializing in flamenco, ballet, and modern jazz. In college, she studied Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban modern dance. Afterwards, she worked on incorporating Cuban body movement to her contemporary and modern jazz pieces. She also teaches weekly classes on Cuban social dances, and has taught at various national dance congresses.
Leilani’s focus is on mastering the control and isolation of particular muscles in the body, allowing students to take command of their body movements. This class will help students build confidence and develop a new avenue for self-expression, in addition to improving strength, flexibility, and technique.
