July 5, 2018 7:00-9:00PM LADAMA at Abington Art Center

LADAMA is a music ensemble comprised of four musicians from across the Americas who strive to engage youth and other women in their respective communities in the process of music-making, sound design, composition and audio production. We aim to address gender inequality and unequal representation of women in all aspects of music education, industry and business. Through workshops and public performance we encourage all to express their humanity by building community through music.
As musicians we collaborate to create original compositions, bringing together the disparate elements of a traditional band while writing non-traditional music. LADAMA performs modern, soulful and vibrant original compositions that celebrate cross-cultural, Pan-American collaboration. South American and Caribbean rhythms such as cumbia, coco, maracatu, onda nueva and joropo run like currents through pop and soul-infused songs sung in Spanish, English and PortugueseAs educators and facilitators we draw from the specific cultural contexts of the communities that we hope to serve in order to provide a foundation for participants to use music as a basic form of personal expression to address issues pertinent to them.

The concert series will run from mid-June through the end of July on Thursday evenings on our beautiful back lawn and amphitheater. The event is open and free to the public and guests are encouraged to come early and picnic on the lawn. Guests can bring their own food or enjoy selections from an on-site food truck and beverages from our sponsored Beer Garden in the Pavilion.

The Abington Art Center & The Lucky Goat are please to present our 2nd Annual World Music series.

Week one June 28, 2018: Alsarah & The Nubatones.

Alsarah & the Nubatones were born out of many dinner conversations between Alsarah and Rami el Aasar about Nubian songs of return, modern migration patterns, and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt. A common love for the richness of pentatonic sounds, and shared migration experiences expanded the conversation to include Armenian – American oud player Haig Manouki- an and French-born Togo- raised bass player Mawuena Kodjovi. Under the leadership of Alsarah, the Brooklyn based group’s sound grew into what they have dubbed as ‘east – african retro-pop’.

The Mission of Molestice:
Build the Philadelphia community through music, block by block.

Our vision for the future of Molestice is to activate every block of Mole Street in Philadelphia on the longest day of the year with a community music festival and cultural gathering.

With Molestice, we see a future in Philadelphia that’s vibrant and harmonious. We want to see Molestice become what Jazz Fest is to New Orleans—taking over the city with a celebration of music, culture and camaraderie!

When you check out Mole Street on a map of Philadelphia, this quirky street extends from the deep South all the way to North Philadelphia. In the next 3-5 years we want to grow Molestice from a single block party to a citywide celebration.

Molestice History:

For over 35 years, arts enthusiasts living on the 100 block of North Mole Street have embraced the summer solstice with an all-day block party called Molestice. On the longest day of the year, the corner of Race and Mole streets in Philadelphia come alive with the sounds of melodies and smells of delicious food.

In recent years, Mole Street, has produced the annual event, transforming it from a neighborhood block party to a full-scale music festival, while remaining true to its community performance roots.
