Crafting Community: Africa to America
Saturday, October 27
10 a.m. Celebration
Free & Open to the Public
Building upon a recent trip to West Africa where she studied traditional Ghanaian pottery techniques,Yinka Orafidiya of Crafting Community: Africa to America invited Black women in the Philadelphia area to join her in making clay vessels by hand. The pottery is produced in a communal fashion, allowing for multiple participants to contribute to the completion of a single vessel.

On Saturday, October 27, guests of all backgrounds are invited to join Crafting Community for a community processional from Temple Contemporary to the African American Museum in Philadelphia. Led by Orafidiya, along with a group of black women potters and drummers organized by Latreice Branson and Drum Like A Lady, the 3-Mile Community Processional will bring the vessels made during the community workshops to AAMP for a free public celebration and conversation on this project.  More details, below;
  • *Due to inclement weather those who participate in the processional will transport the vessels by bus. Please join us for the community celebration at AAMP, beginning at 10:00 a.m.!
  • 10 am -  Doors open at the African American Museum in Philadelphia (701 Arch Street, Philadelphia PA) for the free community celebration and conversation.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration for the processional and public celebration at AAMP are encouraged.  To volunteer to assist Crafting Community during the processional, please emailyinka.orafidiya@gmail.com.
