May 1- 5, 2019 Mexican Week in Philadelphia: Discover the Rich Diversity of Mexican Culture


MAY 1ST – FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
Consul of Mexico, Alicia Kerber will be joined by Mayor Jim Kenney, other officials and prominent dignitaries at the raising of the Mexican flag.

MAY 1ST - “AFROMEXICANS” PRIDE AND BELONGING
Photographic exhibition of the National Commission for Human Rights in Mexico that seeks the visibility of the Afro-descendant population in Mexico, to be displayed until May 10th.

MAY 2ND - “DIZHSA NABANI” LIVING LANGUAGE
This documentary explores the relationship between identity, language and daily life in the Zapotec community in Oaxaca, Mexico. Followed by a Q & A session with experts.
MAY 3RD - PREHISPANIC CULINARY EXPERIENCE
Chef Dionicio Jimenez will offer a demonstration of traditional Mexican cuisine before Spanish colonization, considered a delicacy by the Aztecs. Call (215) 592-0410 to purchase tickets. $100/Adults, limited 50 guests.
MAY 5TH - ¡CONEXIONES!
Orchestra 2001 presents a concert featuring music by four contemporary Mexican classical composers with influences ranging from Aztec roots to the present day.

MAY 5TH – “ALEBRIJES”
Alebrije Contest! Including a short talk by artist Cesar Viveros about these magical creatures and the opportunity for a limited number of guests to join in making them, as part of PECO’s “Free First Sunday” at Barnes Foundation.
